(CLO) U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a key address to Congress on Tuesday evening, declaring "America is back" and pledging to pursue tough policies on immigration, the economy , and foreign affairs.

President Trump declared before Congress that his administration would strive to restore America's self-determination, promising that this term would mark the most glorious period in the nation's history. In his speech, Trump emphasized, "America is back" and "the American Dream is rising."

The 100-minute speech – the longest in modern history by a president before the U.S. Congress – marked a strong comeback for Trump after his second term in office this January.

Foreign policy: Negotiating with Ukraine and Russia, cutting military aid.

One of the highlights of Trump's speech was the situation in Ukraine. He revealed that Kyiv was ready to sign a key minerals agreement with the US, giving Washington access to strategic resources such as lithium, nickel, and rare earth elements. This was seen as a move to reduce America's dependence on China in the industrial and energy sectors.

Trump also emphasized that Ukraine had expressed willingness to resume peace talks. However, the Trump administration's decision to halt all military aid to Kyiv has raised concerns among NATO allies. Many Democratic lawmakers criticized the move, arguing that it could weaken Ukraine's defenses against Russia.

On Moscow's side, Trump asserted that he had had "serious discussions" with the Russian government and received "strong signals" that the Kremlin was ready to negotiate peace. He did not provide details about any conditions Russia might demand during the negotiations.

Furthermore, Trump reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland. He painted a picture of prosperity and security for the autonomous Danish island, promising that if Greenland joined the US, its people would be wealthier and more prosperous than ever before.

"We will keep you safe, we will make you rich, and together we will take Greenland to heights you never thought possible," Trump declared to applause from Republican lawmakers.

Mr. Trump emphasized that Greenland, despite its small population, is a vast territory that plays a crucial role in the U.S. national security strategy. Located on the shortest route from Europe to North America, Greenland is considered a key element in Washington's ballistic missile warning system. "We really need it for world security," Mr. Trump stressed.

Immigration policy: Increased deportations, continued border wall construction.

Trump devoted much of his speech to emphasizing stricter immigration controls, pledging to launch "the largest deportation campaign in American history."

He stated that his administration was increasing funding for the deportation of undocumented immigrants while continuing to build the border wall between the US and Mexico.

According to Trump, millions of illegal immigrants flooded into the U.S. during former President Joe Biden's term, causing an increase in crime and putting pressure on the economy. He demanded that Congress quickly approve additional funding to complete the remainder of the border wall, while warning that he would use executive power if Congress did not cooperate.

Economic policy: Imposing heavy tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada.

Trump continued to emphasize his protectionist trade policies, announcing a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, while also increasing tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%.

These moves immediately drew reactions from the countries involved. Canada announced it would impose retaliatory tariffs on more than $100 billion worth of US goods, while China imposed retaliatory tariffs on a range of US agricultural products, and Mexico is expected to announce its own countermeasures later this week.

In addition, Trump pledged to reduce inflation and help Americans cope with rising living costs. He criticized the Biden administration for escalating prices, highlighting that egg prices had surged over the past year, becoming a symbol of inflation under the previous administration.

Reactions from Congress: Support from Republicans, opposition from Democrats

Trump's speech received strong support from Republican members, many of whom rose to their feet, applauded, and chanted "USA! USA!" throughout the speech.

Conversely, many Democratic lawmakers expressed their disapproval, with some holding protest signs and even leaving the hall before the speech ended.

Senator Elissa Slotkin, representing the Democratic Party, delivered a counter-sentence shortly afterward. She criticized Trump on his foreign policy and trade policies, and recalled the role of former President Ronald Reagan in the Cold War.

Ms. Slotkin warned that cutting aid to Ukraine could weaken the U.S. position internationally, while also expressing concern that Trump's new tariff measures could harm the domestic economy.
