Female accountant embezzled nearly 70 billion VND in social insurance

On May 24, Hanoi City Police announced that the Investigation Police Agency had prosecuted and temporarily detained Do Thuong Thuong (34 years old) for the crime of embezzlement of property.

According to the authorities, Thuong is an accountant at the Social Insurance Agency of Nam Tu Liem District, assigned to prepare documents for payment of insurance money for cases of illness, maternity, convalescence, and health recovery for individuals and companies participating in Social Insurance in Nam Tu Liem District (Hanoi).

From October 26, 2022 to February 19, 2024, taking advantage of loopholes in the process of approving money transfer documents of the leaders of Nam Tu Liem District Social Insurance, Thuong created fake payment orders on the centralized accounting software system, changing the beneficiary information on the bank transfer statement.

Then, Thuong transferred the money to the personal accounts of his acquaintances. When these people received the money, Thuong asked them to transfer the money back to their personal accounts to appropriate it.

Currently, Thuong is unable to repay. Authorities determined that the total amount of money the subject has embezzled from the Social Insurance of Nam Tu Liem district is more than 68 billion VND.

On April 26, Thuong was arrested while hiding in Binh Duong .
