(Dan Tri Newspaper) – With a last-minute change of heart in choosing biology as her major, Le Thao Ngan (from Quang Nam province) won first prize in the national excellent student competition and is the only female student to be directly admitted to the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Almost missed out on direct admission due to a special reason.
Le Thao Ngan is one of the five candidates who were directly admitted to the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2024, and also the only female student.
She is a former student of the 12th grade specialized biology class at Nguyen Binh Khiem High School for the Gifted in Quang Nam province. She was admitted directly to medical school because she won first prize in biology in the national excellent student competition last academic year.
Speaking to a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper , Thao Ngan said she wasn't surprised because she was confident about the direct admission criteria, but she didn't think there were only 5 students on the list and that she was the only female.
Ngan also had a heart-stopping moment when her direct admission application documents were lost. She submitted her application, the post office confirmed successful delivery, but she received no notification from the school. After dozens of phone calls, she was finally able to contact them and retrieve her documents.
"Normally, other universities would notify candidates after receiving their applications, so I was worried and contacted them again. Luckily, I discovered the issue in time and contacted the school; otherwise, I probably wouldn't have been on the list of those admitted directly," Thao Ngan recounted.

The girl from Quang Nam said that being admitted directly was the result of a long process of effort since 11th grade. As a student specializing in a subject, Thao Ngan was guided by her teachers to participate in the national excellent student competition and had a clear study plan. However, she achieved the feat of being the first person in this province to win first prize in biology nationally since 1997.
Notably, just before the national gifted student competition, both of her parents were involved in serious accidents and had to be hospitalized.
"I had to balance all three things at once: studying, taking care of my parents, and doing housework, so it was quite difficult," Ngân recalled.
She recounted that she had several sleepless nights before the exam and didn't perform as well as she had hoped. When she learned she had won first prize, she burst into tears and immediately shared the good news with her parents.

As a student specializing in biology, Thao Ngan dedicated 80% of her study time to this subject. In 10th grade, she won third prize in the provincial-level excellent student competition. This achievement was improved to second prize in 11th grade and third prize in the national-level excellent student competition. In addition, she won a gold medal in biology at the traditional April 30th Olympic competition and the regional excellent student competition for the Northern Coastal and Delta regions.
A year later, Ngan won first prize in the provincial and national student excellence competitions, and qualified for the selection round of the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) team.
Continuing to fulfill our parents' dreams.
Ngan has loved and dreamed of becoming a doctor since elementary school due to her family's aspirations. When Ngan's father was young, their family was poor, so even though he dreamed of becoming a doctor, he couldn't fulfill that dream.
In ninth grade, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, which further strengthened Ngan's resolve to pursue this path. She chose to apply to a specialized biology class in high school, even though she had excelled in mathematics and won an honorable mention in the provincial-level mathematics competition.
I made a last-minute decision to switch to the biology specialization exam just a few months before the exam because my mother advised me that choosing biology would be more helpful in becoming a doctor.

Becoming a doctor is my parents' dream, and it's also a way for me to research methods for treating cancer patients.
She knew that becoming a doctor would be very difficult, but because of her passion and love for the job, she would overcome any hardship.
The female student said she always makes detailed study plans, takes careful notes, and completes tasks daily, avoiding putting things off until the next day. She has a small notebook to record her mistakes so she can learn from them and remember them better.
In preparation for her upcoming studies at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Le Thao Ngan has spent time researching the curriculum, finding study materials, and learning specialized English. Additionally, she recently achieved an IELTS score of 7.5, primarily through online learning.
"I'm determined to study hard to earn a scholarship and lessen the burden on my parents because the school's tuition fees are a bit high compared to my family's financial situation ," Thảo Ngân explained.

Mr. Vo Ngoc Binh, the homeroom teacher and biology teacher, shared that this student started out as a good math student in junior high school. However, with a passion for biology, especially with her future career aspirations to become a medical doctor, Ngan chose to specialize in biology.
The teachers sensed something very special about Ngan: besides her passion, she also possessed a sharp mind, always striving for excellence, and demonstrating confidence and composure in exams.
“From those initial hesitant steps, she has continuously strived and made remarkable progress. Her diligence, perseverance, and progressive spirit are not only reflected in her academic achievements but also in how she faces challenges and learns from experiences,” teacher Binh shared.
For the male teachers, Thao Ngan is not only an excellent student but also a person with good qualities and the ability to overcome difficulties, which makes them very proud of her.
