Mass of matter at depths of thousands of kilometers

An international team of geophysicists has just announced evidence of the existence and movement of a giant mass of matter in the area near the Earth's core.

The discovery, if confirmed, could open up new insights into the mechanisms that maintain the planet's magnetic field, which is an essential shield protecting life from cosmic radiation.

The research, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters , was conducted by a team led by scientist Charlotte Gaugne Gouranton from Paris Cité University (France).

Scientists analyzed data from two NASA GRACE satellites, originally designed to monitor changes in groundwater and global sea levels.

During the analysis of data collected between 2006 and 2008, the research team discovered unusual signals coming from deep within the Earth, specifically the area where the mantle and outer core meet.

By measuring tiny changes in the Earth's gravitational field, they detected signs of a giant mass moving thousands of kilometers deep.

Co-author Isabelle Panet (Gustave Eiffel University, France) commented: “This movement may be related to changes in the boundary between the core and the mantle – where temperatures and pressures reach extremely high levels.”

This phenomenon is thought to have the potential to affect the way the Earth's core rotates and interacts with the mantle, thereby directly affecting the formation and maintenance of the planet's magnetic field - a key factor protecting the Earth from solar wind and space radiation.

Expectations from the GRACE-FO mission

To verify this hypothesis, scientists plan to continue exploiting data from the GRACE-FO (GRACE Follow-On) mission, two successor satellites launched by NASA since May 2018.

With more precise measurement technology, GRACE-FO is expected to help detect more clearly fluctuations in the core-mantle boundary, thereby clarifying the relationship between mass movement deep in the Earth and the global magnetic field.

If the research results are confirmed, this will be an important step forward in the field of modern geophysics, opening up a new approach to explore the "silent movements" below the crust of the planet where humans live.
