New fish species discovered with human-like teeth and "devil markings"

(NLĐO) - The new fish species has been given the scientific name Myloplus sauron, inspired by the Eye of Sauron in the movie "Lord of the Rings".

In a study recently published in the scientific journal Neotropical Ichthyology, scientists have described a new species of fish lurking in the Amazon River, with an appearance easily mistaken for a piranha, human-like teeth, and a fearsome marking on its body.

The new fish species, scientifically named Myloplus sauron, belongs to the genus Myloplus of the pacu family, a relative of the aggressive piranha.

According to Live Science, Myloplus sauron has many extremely unique characteristics.

It went undiscovered because it had evolved to look almost identical to a related species, Myloplus chomburgkii, which had been known since 1841.

Additionally, co-author Rupert Collins, senior curator of fish at the Natural History Museum in London, UK, stated that the pattern on its body closely resembles the Eye of Sauron, particularly with the orange patches on its body.

Myloplus sauron might also startle you if you open your mouth, because inside is a set of teeth very similar to human teeth. The authors say they evolved this flat, human-like tooth type to chew plants more easily.

Previously, pacu and piranha, both belonging to the Serrasalmidae family, were often thought of as aggressive and bloodthirsty predators. But in reality, the majority of both groups are actually omnivores and prefer a diet that is primarily plant-based.

Besides Myloplus chomburgkii, this species is also closely related to Myloplus aylans. It is possible that the three species share a common ancestor from not so long ago.

Researchers also identified a potential fourth pacu species in the Tapajós River, which closely resembles other members of the genus but has large black spots instead of stripes on its sides. However, they are still investigating whether this is a distinct species or a subspecies of Myloplus chomburgkii.
