Women from ethnic minorities develop production cooperatives.

(GLO) - In order to increase family income and develop stable and sustainable production, in recent times, many female members of ethnic minorities in localities throughout Gia Lai province have boldly participated in production cooperatives in villages and hamlets.

From there, the fragmented and small-scale mindset in agricultural production among farmers has changed, contributing to the increasingly prosperous development of the agricultural economy in rural areas.

Preserving traditional crafts and generating additional income.

To preserve and spread the unique cultural values of the ethnic group, in 2019, the Women's Union of Pờ Tó commune established a Bana brocade weaving group in Hamlet 5 with 10 members; to date, the number of members has tripled. Ms. Dinh Nhu, the head of the brocade weaving group, happily said: "It's noteworthy that the weaving group not only attracts mothers and grandmothers but also has the increasing participation of young girls. Everyone feels excited and proud to be able to preserve and promote the traditional craft of our ethnic group."

To widely promote their weaving products, the young members have been dynamic and creative in promoting them on social media. Through this, they introduce and spread the unique cultural traditions of their ethnic group to tourists inside and outside the province, while also helping the women earn extra income. The relatively stable market demand further motivates them to continuously learn and create new and unique patterns, making their products more distinctive and suitable for customer needs.

Established in 2017, the brocade weaving association in Vinh Thinh commune has become well-known. This has improved the access to customers for the artisans there. Ms. Dinh Thi Hien (Thanh Quang village, head of the brocade weaving association in Vinh Thinh commune) said: “Thanks to the government's support in establishing the association, providing looms, and offering vocational training, the brocade weaving craft in the locality has been preserved and developed. Many young women have learned to weave brocade, and their products are sold not only within the village but also to tourists, and even fashion designers in Hanoi have placed orders.”

The village of Ha Van Tren (Canh Vinh commune) also received investment to revive the traditional brocade weaving craft quite early. Since 2014, the village has been supported with 50 small looms and 15 large looms, along with sewing machines, overlock machines, and irons, enabling residents to participate in brocade weaving. By 2020, the collective trademark "Ha Van Tren Brocade Fabric" was certified. In 2022, the "Brocade Weaving" cooperative of women in Ha Van Tren village was established, further motivating the government and people to work together to preserve this cultural beauty.

Promote the establishment of production cooperatives.

The Provincial Women's Union currently has over 616,800 members, of which more than 25% are ethnic minorities, mainly residing in the western part of the province. In addition to encouraging members to participate in cooperative groups to preserve and promote the unique cultural values of their ethnic groups, combined with family economic development, in recent years, the Women's Union at all levels in the province has also encouraged many ethnic minority women to participate in cooperative groups for growing sweet corn, producing and selling rice, coffee, etc.

Not only have these cooperative groups attracted many women to participate, but they are also becoming increasingly effective. The coffee production and consumption cooperative group implemented by the Women's Union of Lo Pang commune is one such example. From 2021 to the present, the Women's Union of the commune has collaborated with the Lo Pang Agricultural and Service Cooperative to support women in the sustainable production and consumption of coffee. Over the past four years, the cooperative group has attracted more than 150 ethnic minority women from villages in the area due to the many benefits it provides. Women not only receive support, advice, and technical guidance on planting, caring for, and controlling pests and diseases in coffee plants, but also benefit from deferred payment options for fertilizers and support in selling their produce at market prices.

Ms. Avơi, a member of the coffee production and consumption cooperative in Roh village (Lơ Pang commune), said: “By joining the cooperative, I learned how to prune, fertilize, water, and harvest coffee efficiently and scientifically. Before, I used to harvest green coffee beans, but now I only harvest and dry them when they ripen to a red color. I sell them when the price is high and keep them when it's low.”

Mr. Ngo Quang Ty, Director of the Agricultural and Service Cooperative in Lo Pang commune, said: “The cooperative provides fertilizers without interest, and offers scientific and technical advice to help farmers care for their coffee plants. We also purchase coffee at market prices to ensure a stable market for the farmers.”

By promoting the establishment of production groups and cooperatives among women in rural and ethnic minority areas, many women have not only changed their mindset and methods in agricultural production but also learned how to exploit and develop traditional crafts to increase income and improve their lives. This contributes to the effective implementation of the "Support for Cooperatives Managed by Women, Creating Jobs for Female Workers by 2030" project, linked to three national target programs on building new rural areas, sustainable poverty reduction, and socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas of the province.
