According to Mr. Trieu Minh Long, Director of the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Information and Communications, ASEAN is playing an increasingly important role in regional and global cooperation mechanisms, playing a central role in addressing and resolving many of the world 's issues.

Vietnam is an active member of ASEAN and is proactively implementing many cooperation programs and initiatives to enhance the role and position of ASEAN in general, as well as the role of Vietnam in particular, in contributing to the prosperous development of the region and the world.

“A week ago, the ASEAN summit was successfully held in the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Following this summit, ASEAN is increasingly asserting its central role and comprehensive cooperation mechanisms in the region,” Mr. Trieu Minh Long commented.

Mr. Tran Duc Binh, Director of the ASEAN Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the world and the region are undergoing complex changes, with fierce competition among major powers, escalating tensions in hotspots, and a global economy recovering but facing many risks.

After 8 years of implementing the ASEAN Community building plan, in 2023, the ASEAN region's GDP increased by 51%, reaching a size of US$3.8 trillion, ranking 5th in the world with an overall growth rate of 4.2%. Foreign direct investment (FDI) into the ASEAN region in 2023 ranked 2nd globally (after the US). It is projected that the ASEAN economy will rank 4th in the world by 2030. At that time, the ASEAN digital economy will reach approximately US$2 trillion.

According to Mr. Tran Duc Binh, the ASEAN cooperation mechanism has three basic pillars: the political-security pillar, the economic pillar, and the socio-cultural pillar. The building of the ASEAN Community is being implemented evenly across these three pillars. The vision for the ASEAN Community in 2045 is "Resilient, dynamic, innovative, and people-centered."

In this overall context, ASEAN's role is crucial. Partners affirm that ASEAN is a priority in their regional policies, support ASEAN's central role, and work with ASEAN to implement comprehensive cooperation, promote economic, trade and investment connectivity, science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, green transformation, and the development of high-quality human resources.

According to Ms. Nguyen Viet Chi, Deputy Director of the Multilateral Trade Policy Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade, after 29 years of Vietnam's accession, ASEAN has become one of the most important multilateral forums. In the context of a challenging global economy, the ASEAN regional economy continues to show many positive signs.

The GDP of the entire ASEAN region increased by more than 4% last year and is projected to grow by 4.6% this year. In terms of trade, China is ASEAN's largest trading partner, followed by the US and the EU. Total FDI inflows into ASEAN in 2023 reached US$229 billion, with the US being the largest investor. Countries in the region completed 9 out of 14 priority economic initiatives during Laos's chairmanship of ASEAN.

ASEAN is currently fulfilling its commitments to international integration, deeper economic integration, and further cooperation in intra-regional trade activities, connecting with external partners to respond to and address challenges, and strengthening regional supply chains. Digital transformation is considered by ASEAN countries as a key driver of growth in the coming period.
