On the afternoon of July 18, in Hanoi, the Truth National Political Publishing House held a book launch ceremony "Vietnam - A perspective from Japan" by Professor, Doctor of Japan Furuta Motoo, President of Vietnam Japan University (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), a Vietnam scholar, expert on modern history and Vietnamese politics .
The book "Vietnam - A View from Japan" is the result of more than half a century of research and attachment to Vietnam by Professor, Dr. Furuta Motoo. The content of the book not only presents historical, institutional, economic and social issues, but also vividly depicts daily life in Vietnam through an academic lens combined with the author's personal experiences.
From the daily activities of the people, cultural beliefs, social behavior, to macro issues such as the history of building and defending the country, the reform - innovation process, international integration and the geopolitical role of Vietnam in the region, the book sketches a panoramic picture of Vietnam through the unique perspective and approach of a foreign scholar.
What makes the work so appealing is the “bottom-up” approach that Professor, Dr. Furuta Motoo applies. Instead of focusing on major political events, he exploits the details of everyday life to explain the unique social characteristics of Vietnam.
From the atmosphere of village meetings, the image of people "asking for permission" when participating in traffic, to beliefs such as housewarming or the decision to keep the banyan tree and village gate for spiritual reasons, are recreated in a close and emotional way.
The book was launched on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025), the 52nd anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations (September 21, 1973 - September 21, 2025), and two years of "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World."
This is not only a carefully researched scientific work, but also a living symbol of the sincere and lasting friendship between the two countries.
The publication of this book not only contributes to enriching the treasure trove of knowledge on Vietnamese studies, but is also a vivid testament to the long-standing attachment, deep friendship and silent but meaningful contributions of Japanese scientists to Vietnam.
Previously, Professor, Dr. Furuta Motoo had many research works on Vietnam, of which 3 works have been translated into Vietnamese and published in Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh - National Liberation and Innovation (National Political Publishing House, 1997); Vietnam in World History (National Political Publishing House, 1998); The 1945 Famine in Vietnam - Historical Evidences, the book was awarded the State Prize of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for Science and Technology (Social Sciences Publishing House, 2005; Knowledge Publishing House, 2011 and Truth National Political Publishing House, 2016 and 2022). The book "Vietnam - A Perspective from Japan" is his fourth work published by Truth National Political Publishing House.
At the ceremony, delegates from Japan emphasized the lasting friendship and commitment to continue promoting educational, cultural and political cooperation between Japan and Vietnam. At the same time, they affirmed that the book plays an important role in enhancing mutual understanding and is a bridge between parliamentarians of the two countries.
After the Launch Ceremony, Professor, Dr. Furuta Motoo had a live exchange with readers.
With a deep understanding of Vietnamese culture and the ability to use Vietnamese fluently, the exchange brought many touching and sincere sharing from a Japanese friend who has chosen to spend his life in the S-shaped country./.
