A humanoid robot martial arts competition was held by China Media Group in Hangzhou, China, marking a historic step forward in the field of robotics technology.

The competition is a special event where humanoid robots demonstrate their strength through martial arts, a sport that requires dexterity, balance and flexible movement, which is the goal that robot manufacturers are aiming for.

This year, the competition only featured humanoid robots from Unitree Robotics, China’s largest robot developer. Organizers hope to attract more international competitors in future competitions.

The competition consists of two parts: exhibition matches and knockout matches. The humanoid robots are remotely controlled and can unleash any move to defeat their opponents, without the limitations of human martial arts matches.

Unitree Robotics engineer Tran Hi Van said the robots can perform straight punches, hooks, roundhouse kicks and spinning kicks in the air, as well as bounce back quickly after being knocked down.

Tran said the robots participating in the tournament are designed to operate flexibly in a fast-paced environment and react quickly. Unitree's goal is to develop robots that can analyze situations and attack using AI without human assistance.

The tournament has attracted great attention from the Chinese public, bringing dramatic, thrilling and humorous situations to viewers.

Many people think of the 2011 movie "Real Steel," where martial arts matches between humanoid robots became a popular sport.

After the first test tournament, China Media Group plans to hold a second tournament in December, hoping to include robots from countries such as the US and Japan.

The organizers said the tournament is an opportunity for international robot companies to demonstrate their latest achievements in humanoid robot development, including artificial intelligence and flexible mobility.

Sports involving humanoid robots are booming. Last April, a human-versus-robot half marathon took place in Beijing, China.

The first robot completed the 21km run in 2 hours and 40 minutes, far behind the 1 hour and 2 minutes of the first person to reach the finish line.

The Chinese government is investing heavily in the humanoid robot sector with preferential policies for startups, helping China lead the humanoid robot market.

China's humanoid robot market is expected to reach 870 billion yuan ($120 billion) by 2030, according to the Chinese Institute of Electronics.
