This is the case of Mrs. CY (58 years old, Cambodian nationality). According to her medical history, she had previously experienced frequent dull abdominal pain, but thought it was due to unsuitable food and silently endured it for over a month. Only when the pain became increasingly pronounced did she decide to come to Vietnam for examination.
At Nam Saigon International General Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City), through clinical examination results, doctors discovered a 4x5cm tumor in the patient, suspected to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).
Fortunately, the tumor was in an early stage and had not invaded surrounding organs. Dr. Nguyen Trung Duong, Deputy Head of the General Surgery Department at Nam Saigon International General Hospital, planned for early surgical treatment and indicated gastric tumor resection for the patient after a comprehensive assessment.
This is the optimal method for completely removing the tumor while preserving the stomach structure.

During the surgery, the team used a "stapler"—a modern device that allows for simultaneous cutting and suturing, shortening the operating time and minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
The tumor was removed using specialized equipment, and then the excised area was reinforced with absorbable sutures, ensuring a tight seal and reducing the risk of leakage after surgery.
The entire surgery went smoothly and took only 30 minutes. The tumor was completely removed, the incision was clean, there was minimal bleeding, and as much healthy tissue as possible was preserved.
Post-surgery, Mrs. Y. recovered well, was able to eat and sleep, and experienced almost no difficulties in her daily life. Throughout the monitoring period, the patient's health indicators remained stable. Mrs. Y. was discharged after 3 days of treatment and scheduled for a follow-up appointment.
According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Duong, GIST is a rare type of gastrointestinal tumor that can progress silently over a long period. Symptoms are often subtle and easily mistaken for common digestive disorders such as mild abdominal pain, bloating, feeling full quickly after eating, or persistent fatigue.
Neglecting or delaying medical examination can allow the tumor to grow larger, leading to dangerous complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, stomach perforation, or metastasis.
"Patient Y's case was detected at the right time, the golden time for thorough intervention without affecting the structure and function of the digestive system."
Therefore, when abnormal symptoms appear in the abdominal area, patients should seek early check-up for timely diagnosis and treatment,” Dr. Duong said.
According to Dr. Duong, the biggest advantage of the stapler technique in GIST tumor intervention is that it allows the treatment team to handle the tumor quickly, efficiently, and accurately while preserving healthy tissue. As a result, patients recover faster, experience less pain, and the risk of postoperative complications is significantly reduced.
With a team of experienced doctors and the application of many modern techniques, Nam Saigon International General Hospital has become a reliable address for treating complex digestive diseases, helping patients undergo surgery safely and recover quickly, returning to their daily lives sooner.
