The diplomatic crisis stemming from Argentine President Javier Milei's statements against Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez led Madrid to withdraw its ambassador from Buenos Aires.
During a hearing before the House of Representatives, Argentine Cabinet Chief Guillermo Francos emphasized: "The diplomatic relationship with Spain is strategic, encompassing political , economic, cultural, and cooperative ties with a long and deep history."
In a report presented to the House of Representatives every six months, Mr. Francos stated that the relationship with Spain is "very broad, diverse, multifaceted, interdependent, and involves exchanges at various levels. Government, private, and civil society actors from both countries interact dynamically."
A document from President Milei's administration stated: "The friendly relations between Argentina and Spain are a principle that remains valid and supports commitments to cooperation in all areas for the common good, aimed at promoting the well-being of the people."
Buenos Aires estimates Spain to be the second largest investor in Argentina. According to 2021 statistics, nearly 329,000 Argentinians reside in Spain. This European country also has five consulates general in the South American nation: Buenos Aires, Bahía Blanca, Cordoba, Mendoza, and Rosario.
When questioned about whether the crisis with Madrid would affect relations with the European Union (EU), Francos assured that Argentina's relationship with the EU was "solid and strong, with great potential for growth."
