Won second prize in the national math competition for excellent students.

Among more than 1,000 students of the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) recognized for graduation in the 4th batch of 2025, La Nguyen Gia Hy graduated 1 semester ahead of schedule, with an absolute GPA of 4.0/4.0. The male student also has an IELTS certificate of 8.0, achieved the title of 5-good student, excellent student in all aspects, and a graduation project score of 9.4.

Originally a math major at the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University), Gia Hy was admitted directly to Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology after winning second prize in the national math competition for gifted students.

Sharing the reason for choosing to major in artificial intelligence (AI), the male student said that since he was young, he was interested in the impressive capabilities of this field. Especially when he learned about systems that can play chess - like Google's AlphaGo defeating the world's top player in Go - which is considered one of the most complex challenges for computers.

Entering university, school subjects such as machine learning and introductory AI helped Hy access a systematic knowledge base, thereby further clarifying his passion and long-term orientation in this field. In recent years, the emergence of generative AI models such as ChatGPT or Deepseek has made Hy even more curious and wanting to learn more. During his studies, Hy participated in a number of research and engineering projects in the field of AI, such as the school's admissions consulting chatbot, the AI waste classification system, etc.

Currently, Gia Hy is a member of the URA research group at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. The group develops methods to improve the responsiveness and personalization of the university's admissions chatbot. In addition, Hy is participating in writing a scientific paper as the main author developed from his graduation project. The paper has been submitted to a Rank B international conference, is in the process of peer review and is expected to have results in mid-May.

Only one subject has the lowest score: 7.5 points

To achieve the above excellent results, Gia Hy believes that it is necessary to have a clear study plan and make effective use of time. Hy has carefully studied the academic regulations and built a suitable roadmap, in which the important requirement is to complete the major project before doing the graduation project. Hy did this project early in the second semester of the third year. Thanks to that, Hy had an easier final semester and took advantage of the time to study and improve some subjects that did not achieve good results.

Previously, the male student had proactively studied basic and specialized subjects in advance during the summer vacation to have more time to review for the final exam and focus on major assignments. In addition, Hy spent time reading the textbook (400-500 pages) carefully to understand the lesson comprehensively, instead of just studying through lecture slides.

However, Gia Hy admitted that there were still some subjects that she did not get the best results from the first exam, such as politics and law, because she did not pay close attention to reviewing. After learning from her experience, Gia Hy improved her studies and achieved an A. The only subject that Gia Hy only got 7.5 points for was programming language principles - considered the most difficult subject in the computer science department.

Hy balances studying with research by reading books and listening to music, and actively learning English to relax. On weekends, he often plays sports to exercise and stay positive. Sharing his future plans, Gia Hy said that in the next 2-3 years, he will study postgraduate programs specializing in AI, and continue to participate in projects applying AI to practical problems.
