Billionaire Elon Musk's aerospace company SpaceX has just agreed to invest $2 billion in xAI - the artificial intelligence (AI) startup he founded - according to sources from close investors quoted by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on July 13.
The investment is part of xAI's $5 billion equity fundraising plan, announced by Morgan Stanley in June 2025.
This is also the first time SpaceX has directly invested in xAI, and is one of the largest investments SpaceX has ever made in a company outside the aerospace sector.
Billionaire Musk has repeatedly used his financial strength and business network to promote the development of xAI - a company he positions as a direct competitor to OpenAI, the globally famous unit with the ChatGPT platform.
Earlier this year, Mr. Musk merged xAI into the social network X (formerly Twitter), with the goal of expanding the popularity and application of the AI model Grok - a chatbot developed by xAI.
The merger valued the combined company at $113 billion, according to the WSJ.
During the launch of Grok version 4 on July 9, Mr. Musk called it "the smartest AI in the world " and revealed plans to integrate Grok into humanoid robots, such as the Optimus line being developed by Tesla.
Grok is now being used in customer service for Starlink, SpaceX's global satellite internet system.
Billionaire Musk's representative said that SpaceX and xAI will likely expand business cooperation in the future, not only in the field of AI but also in other high-tech applications./.
