Mentioning "the farmer mother with two engineering degrees" during his graduation speech, Ngo Cong Tien Anh became emotional, pausing for a few seconds before continuing to express his gratitude.
Ngo Cong Tien Anh, 23 years old, from Son La province, graduated with a GPA of 3.69/4, ranking first among engineering graduates from the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Hanoi University of Science and Technology on October 21st. He is also among the top 7% of outstanding students in the entire university this year.
At the graduation ceremony, Tien Anh represented the graduating engineers and bachelors, delivering a speech to thousands of students and parents. A video capturing that moment was posted on Hanoi University of Science and Technology's Facebook page, attracting nearly two million views and thousands of shares and comments. Many were moved by Tien Anh's heartfelt words of gratitude.
"I would like to thank my grandmother, mother, brothers, sisters, and the person I love. My brother, he is also an outstanding student of the Polytechnic University and he has inspired me. I would also like to thank my mother - whom we are always proud to call the farmer with two engineering degrees. My family is my strongest support system. With everyone by my side and encouraging me, I have never felt lonely, and I can confidently strive for success," Tien Anh shared.
Mentioning his mother, the young man became emotional, pausing for a few seconds. After a round of applause from the entire hall, Tien Anh was finally able to continue expressing his gratitude to all the parents and teachers.
Tiến Anh's father passed away when he was only 9 months old, and his mother and older brother have always been his greatest sources of motivation. His brother also inspired him to choose the Polytechnic University 5 years ago.

Tien Anh took the university entrance exam in 2018. Having been taken to visit several universities by his older brother, an engineer in the field of Mechanical Engineering, who is eight years his senior, Tien Anh was impressed by the Polytechnic University because it was "so vast." Based on his brother's stories, even without having had the opportunity to thoroughly research the fields, Tien Anh decided to put the Polytechnic University on his list of top choices.
With a combined score of 24 in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, the male student was admitted to the Mechatronics Engineering program. Immediately after being accepted, the young man set a goal to graduate with honors, so that his mother could have "two engineering degrees."
"My mother was a farmer who raised my brother and me to support our education. My older brother went to university during a very difficult period, having to cover many expenses himself to help my mother, but he still did well in his studies," Tien Anh shared about his motivation for striving.
Upon entering the lecture hall, Tien Anh was "shocked" by many things. Many subjects were very demanding. He still remembers that in Advanced Mathematics, some concepts mentioned by the professor were unfamiliar to him, yet his classmates eagerly raised their hands to answer. Or take Calculus, for example; the amount of material was so vast that "the professor covered the entire blackboard with writing, then erased and rewrote it several times before finishing." A single class, lasting from 6:45 AM to noon, with three Calculus sessions and three Algebra sessions, overwhelmed Tien Anh. The student also had mixed feelings about living away from his mother for the first time, while his older brother worked in Japan. Therefore, Tien Anh didn't achieve excellent grades in his first semester as he had aimed.
With guidance from his older brother, Tien Anh subsequently set short-term and long-term learning goals and developed plans to achieve them. The student no longer compared himself to his peers as before, but instead focused on deepening his knowledge according to his teachers' instructions.

In the second semester of his second year, Tien Anh received his first scholarship for outstanding academic achievement. From then on, he consistently earned scholarships for excellent grades in every semester, never having to ask his mother for tuition fees. Tien Anh also took on part-time jobs, such as collecting tennis balls, to help cover his living and studying expenses.
From his third year, Tien Anh participated in scientific research at the laboratory and interned at a company in the field of robotics. His income from this work was only two million dong a month, but for Tien Anh, it was a way to learn more about his profession.
"Learning, working, and researching all revolve around robotics, so they complement each other very well," Tiến Anh said.
By the end of his fifth year, Tien Anh predicted his grades would be among the top. He had often thought about representing the students and giving a speech at the graduation ceremony. So when a lecturer asked, "Are you ready?", Tien Anh immediately seized the opportunity.
The male student prepared his speech for a week. After receiving feedback from his teacher, the content was cut in half to make it more concise, lasting about 6 minutes.
"I was very emotional during my speech. My mother, sitting in the front row, recorded the moment with her phone. I don't know if she heard everything I said clearly, but she watched it many times when we got home," Tien Anh recounted. The newly graduated engineer also didn't expect the video to gain so much attention.
Ms. Ngo Thi Hanh, Tien Anh's mother, said she cried when she heard her son's speech and was proud to be called "a farmer with two engineering degrees."
"Tien Anh used to be very thin and almost failed first grade because he often skipped school due to missing his mother. I was busy making tea and doing sewing, so I couldn't closely supervise him. With his older brother's guidance, he worked hard in his studies. Now, I am completely reassured and confident in him," Mrs. Hanh said.

Currently, Tien Anh works at FPT Software. Although robotics remains his passion, Tien Anh believes this field is quite narrow. The young man from Son La wants to expand his knowledge to have more career opportunities in the future.
"This new field is full of challenges, and I'm very inspired to conquer them," Tien Anh said, hoping to prove his abilities, similar to his five years of study at Hanoi University of Technology.
