New Polytechnic engineer moved at graduation ceremony

VnExpressVnExpress24/10/2023

Mentioning the "farmer mother with two engineering degrees" while speaking at the graduation ceremony, Ngo Cong Tien Anh was moved and paused for a few seconds before continuing to express his gratitude.

Ngo Cong Tien Anh, 23 years old, from Son La, graduated with an average score of 3.69/4, ranking first among engineers graduating from the Mechanical Engineering School, Hanoi University of Science and Technology on October 21. The male student is also in the group of 7% of excellent students of the entire university this time.

At the graduation ceremony, Tien Anh represented the new engineers and graduates to speak in front of thousands of students and parents. The video recording that moment was posted on the Hanoi University of Science and Technology Facebook page, attracting nearly two million views and thousands of shares and comments. Many people were moved by Tien Anh's sincere words of gratitude.

"I would like to thank my grandmother, mother, brother, sister and the person I love. My brother, you are also an excellent student of Bách khoa and you are the one who inspired me. I would also like to thank my mother - the person we are always proud to call a farmer with two engineering degrees. My family is my strongest support. With everyone by my side and encouraging me, I have never felt lonely, but have always been confident in striving," Tien Anh shared.

Mentioning his mother, the young man became emotional and paused for a few seconds. After the applause from the entire hall, Tien Anh was able to continue expressing his gratitude to all his parents and teachers.

His father passed away when he was only 9 months old, so his mother and brother have always been Tien Anh's biggest source of motivation. His brother was also the one who inspired Tien Anh to choose Bách khoa 5 years ago.

Tien Anh took the university entrance exam in 2018. His older brother, who is 8 years older and a Mechanical Engineering engineer, took him to visit several universities. Tien Anh was impressed with Polytechnic because it was "too big". Through the stories he told, although he had not had the opportunity to learn more about the profession, Tien Anh decided to put many wishes into Polytechnic.

With a combined score of 24 in Math, Physics, and Chemistry, the male student was admitted to the Mechatronic Engineering major. As soon as he was admitted, the young man set a goal of graduating with honors so that his mother could have "two engineering degrees".

"My mother worked as a farmer to support my two brothers' education. My brother went to university during a very difficult time, had to pay for many things himself to support my mother but still studied well," Tien Anh shared his motivation for trying.

Entering the lecture hall, Tien Anh was "shocked" by many things. Among them, many subjects were very difficult. The young man still remembers when studying advanced mathematics, some knowledge that the teacher mentioned that he did not know but his classmates raised their hands to answer. Or like the subject of Analysis, there was so much knowledge that "the teacher wrote all over the board and erased and rewrote it several times to finish". A class lasted from 6:45 to noon with 3 periods of Analysis and 3 periods of Algebra, making Tien Anh overwhelmed. The male student also had many emotions when living away from his mother for the first time, while his brother worked in Japan. Therefore, Tien Anh did not achieve excellent results in the first semester as his goal.

With his brother's guidance from afar, Tien Anh then set short-term and long-term learning goals and made plans to achieve them. The male student did not compare himself with his friends like before, but focused on deepening his knowledge according to the teachers' guidance.

In the second semester of his sophomore year, Tien Anh received his first scholarship for excellent academic performance. From then on, he received excellent scholarships in every semester and did not have to ask his mother for money to pay for his tuition. Tien Anh also worked part-time jobs such as picking up tennis balls to earn money to pay for his studies.

From the third year, Tien Anh participated in scientific research at the laboratory and interned at a company in the field of Robotics. The income from working was only two million VND a month, but for Tien Anh, this was a way to learn more about the profession.

"Studying, working and researching all revolve around Robotics so they complement each other very well," said Tien Anh.

By the end of his fifth year, Tien Anh predicted that his grades would be among the top. He had thought many times about giving a speech at the graduation ceremony as a student representative. So when a lecturer asked him, "Are you ready?" Tien Anh jumped at the chance.

The male student prepared the speech for a week. After receiving feedback from his teacher, the content was cut in half to make it more concise, about 6 minutes.

"When I gave my speech, I was very emotional. My mother sat in the front row holding her phone to record that moment. I don't know if she heard what I said clearly, but when she got home, she watched it many times," Tien Anh said. The new engineer also didn't expect the video to attract so much attention.

Ms. Ngo Thi Hanh, Tien Anh's mother, said she cried when she heard her son speak and was proud to be named "a farmer with two engineering degrees" by her son.

"Tien Anh used to be very skinny, almost failing the first grade because he often skipped school because he missed his mother. I was busy making tea and sewing, so I couldn't keep up with him. Under the supervision of his brother, he has made great efforts in his studies. Now, I am completely assured and trust him," said Ms. Hanh.

Currently, Tien Anh works at FPT Software Company. Although Robotics is still his passion, Tien Anh thinks that this field is quite narrow. The Son La boy wants to expand his knowledge to have more development directions in the future.

"The new field has many challenges and I am very inspired to conquer them," Tien Anh said, hoping to prove his ability, similar to the 5 years of studying at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
