Ericsson has just released a report estimating that nearly one-fifth of all global mobile subscribers will be 5G subscribers by the end of 2023, thanks to steady growth despite recurring economic difficulties and geopolitical instability in some markets.
Specifically, Ericsson's report predicts 610 million new 5G subscribers for calendar year 2023, a 63% increase compared to 2022, bringing the total number of global subscribers to 1.6 billion, approximately 100 million more than the previous forecast.
5G subscriptions will continue to boom in the near future.
Regionally, 5G subscriptions in North America continue to grow strongly. By the end of 2023, the region is expected to have the highest 5G subscription rate globally at 61%. 5G subscription growth is also strong in India throughout 2023. By the end of 2023, 14 months after commercial launch, 5G penetration is expected to reach 11% in India.
Over the six years from late 2023 to 2029, the number of global 5G subscribers is projected to increase by more than 330%, from 1.6 billion to 5.3 billion. 5G coverage is projected to reach over 45% of the global population by the end of 2023 and 85% by the end of 2029. North America and the Gulf Cooperation Council are expected to have the highest regional 5G penetration rate at 92% by the end of 2029, followed by Western Europe with a projected penetration rate of 85%.
Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Network Systems at Ericsson, said: "With over 600 million 5G subscribers added globally this year and continuing to grow in every region, the demand for high-performance connectivity is clearly enormous. 5G deployment is ongoing and we are seeing more and more 5G SA networks being deployed, providing opportunities to support new applications with higher bandwidth requirements for both consumers and businesses."
Global average data consumption on mobile phones is steadily increasing. Total mobile data traffic is estimated to triple between the end of 2023 and the end of 2029 – driven by positive factors such as improved device capabilities, increased data-intensive content, and continued improvements in the performance of deployed networks.
The number of 5G subscribers is projected to reach approximately 550 million in Southeast Asia and Oceania by the end of 2029. Beyond creating pioneering 5G infrastructure in the region, the focus for service providers is on diversifying services offered to both consumers and businesses. Enhancing customer experience, expanding network coverage, and driving digital transformation for businesses remain top priorities across the region.
Rita Mokbel, Director of Ericsson Vietnam, said: "At Ericsson, we have leveraged our technological leadership to bring world- class user experiences to Vietnam's expanded 4G base stations – easily upgradeable to 5G when needed. 5G will be a critical infrastructure platform to accelerate Vietnam's digital transformation. In the initial phase, 5G will enable service providers in Vietnam to offer enhanced mobile broadband experiences to consumers as well as improve network capacity to manage increasing data traffic. Over time, we expect to see more innovative 5G use cases in enterprise 5G sectors."
