That is the view of Dr. Cu Van Trung, Director of the Institute for Policy and Social Issues Research, in an interview with the World and Vietnam Newspaper regarding human compassion and kindness shown during the recent Typhoon No. 3 and the current flooding situation in Hanoi and the northern provinces.

What is your perspective on humanity and kindness during and after Typhoon No. 3? How was sharing demonstrated in the community during and after the typhoon? What positive changes can sharing bring to society?

I believe that human kindness is a quality that will endure throughout the development of humankind. It exists everywhere, in every community, and in every stage of human history, the presence of kindness and compassion in individuals has been evident.

From ancient times in the East, there has been a typical figure like Mạnh Thường Quân, who specialized in helping ordinary people, the poor, and those who were down on their luck. Vietnamese people possess many good qualities, kindness, and honesty. More importantly, these virtues are amplified and revealed even more clearly through natural disasters and floods.

As a nation with thousands of years of history in nation-building and defense, the Vietnamese people have developed a long-standing sense of community cohesion within their villages, characterized by close ties, mutual affection, and protection to fight against foreign powers and safeguard dikes, villages, and crops from frequent natural disasters.

The recent Typhoon No. 3 caused severe damage to provinces and cities in northern Vietnam. During and after the storm, the acts of mutual assistance and support among the people demonstrated the solidarity, support, and love for one another, reflecting the beautiful traditions and culture of our nation.

"Cars and trucks slowed down together on the Nhat Tan Bridge, helping motorcyclists in the inner lane avoid being blown over by the strong winds. The story of traffic police rescuing a panicked driver trapped in a car after a tree fell on the roadside. The young man who risked his life to save people during the Phong Chau bridge collapse ( Phu Tho ). These are humane and kind stories during and after the storm."

In times of hardship and difficulty like these, acts of sharing and kindness warm our hearts and instill renewed faith in life. Clearly, if these noble qualities are encouraged and spread among individuals, society will only improve.

Countless literary works, moral lectures, and examples of human kindness aim to guide society towards a positive and benevolent goal. Human sharing in difficult circumstances needs to be encouraged and inspired further so that the community can have more positive and far-reaching effects.

What touching stories from the recent storm left a deep impression on you?

Indeed, there are many stories that move us. There are stories from everyday life, such as several cars and trucks slowing down together on the Nhat Tan Bridge to help motorcyclists in the inner lane avoid being blown over by the strong winds.

The story of a motorcyclist, wearing a raincoat, alone in the middle of the road, unable to move due to strong winds, and then having firefighters help hold his motorbike and guide him to the side of the road. The story of traffic police rescuing a panicked driver sitting in his car as a tree falls on the roadside.

Furthermore, there's the news that Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces ceded 100 billion VND in government aid to mountainous provinces affected by Typhoon No. 3. There's also the story of the young man who risked his life to save people during the Phong Chau bridge collapse (Phu Tho). These are just a few examples among many heartwarming and kind acts during and after the storm.

It is evident that both society and the political system exhibit admirable virtues and acts of kindness that deserve praise. People protect each other because of the tradition of "loving others as oneself," the government shares resources with other areas because there are places facing greater difficulties than the province itself; functional forces work day and night to rescue people trapped by storms and floods... All of these are the highest expressions of compassion and humanity.

According to him, what is the significance of kindness in overcoming difficulties and what positive changes can it bring to society?

I believe that kindness possesses an invisible, miraculous power; it acts like a spiritual medicine, helping people overcome difficulties and hardships in an extraordinary way. Small actions, gestures of concern, or inquiries can warm the hearts of those affected and harmed, evoking feelings of warmth and emotion. It dispels common selfishness and brings people closer together.

If kindness and goodness prevail in a society, then people will live in love, trust, and security. That is the dream and goal that any state or political regime advocates for and strives for.

What role has the media played in spreading heartwarming stories about human kindness?

With the increasing level of education, people are realizing that everyone is the same everywhere, everyone has to make a living, and everyone has family members like parents and children... Therefore, any pain, misfortune, or accident caused by natural disasters like storms and floods that befalls each person and each situation evokes sorrow and compassion from the community.

The media has done a very important job of stirring up and nurturing all those deep-seated emotions within us. The media helps to spread and resonate with these feelings, making everyone want to do something useful for the community and society.

I believe that when the media properly reports on events and individuals during floods and storms, it can create many positive effects and spread throughout the community, such as stories about people, honesty, and kindness amidst the storms and floods.

How do you assess the spirit of solidarity among the people during and after the storm? What factors contributed to that spirit of solidarity? What significance does this spirit of solidarity have for the future of the country?

For the Vietnamese people, the two issues that most readily demonstrate the spirit of unity are foreign invasion and combating natural disasters and floods. Since ancient times, our ancestors have always had to face these two issues constantly and persistently.

Therefore, the solidarity, mutual affection, and helping one another of the Vietnamese people seem to be "in their genes," and many folk songs, proverbs, legends, and fairy tales express this spirit: " Oh gourd, have pity on the pumpkin, though they are of different kinds, they share the same vine"; "One tree alone cannot make a mountain, but three trees together can make a high mountain"; "The bee makes honey to nourish the flower, the fish swims in the water, the bird sings to love the sky, my child, if you want to live, you must love your comrades, love your brothers and sisters"...

The people support and care for each other during difficult times, fighting together against foreign invaders as well as against storms, floods, and natural disasters. Besides possessing the good and noble qualities of all nations in the world, the Vietnamese people also have very unique characteristics. The solidarity, mutual assistance, and acts of kindness that emerged when Typhoon No. 3 struck all stem from the deep roots of the long-standing cultural and historical traditions passed down from our ancestors and still present today.

I believe that the issues raised above reflect the unique nature of the Vietnamese people. This nature is noble; the Vietnamese people value emotions and love for their fellow human beings. Therefore, in the process of building and defending the nation, preserving, fostering, and properly promoting this element will help Vietnam stand firm and confidently on its future development path.

Thank you, sir!
