Weakened sperm due to too much steaming

VnExpressVnExpress20/03/2024

Ho Chi Minh City Anh Tuan, 32 years old, often relaxes in a sauna for 30 minutes after going to the gym. Married for two years without children, the doctor concluded that his sperm motility was very poor.

On March 19, Dr. Tra Anh Duy, Men's Health Center, said that the patient had varicocele due to practicing many movements that increased abdominal pressure. In addition, he often used steam baths, causing blood vessels to dilate and testicles to heat up, leading to weak sperm, affecting fertility.

After a period of treatment, stopping the sauna and practicing appropriate movements, the patient's sperm improved significantly. His wife also successfully became pregnant naturally.

According to Dr. Duy, frequent steam baths have a negative impact on sperm production, causing a decrease in quality and infertility. The testicles function well when the temperature is 2-4 degrees Celsius lower than body temperature (about 33-35 degrees Celsius).

Some studies have shown that the testicles can become more active when exposed to a temporary increase in temperature. However, frequent increases in temperature over a long period of time have the opposite effect, inhibiting the testicles or producing more "defective" products.

Recently, the center received a 36-year-old man who came for examination because he had not had a second child after 5 years of natural "letting go". The semen analysis showed that he had OAT sperm (severe oligo-asthenia-depletion) even though he had given birth to one child. The patient said that due to stress and pressure at work, he often took hot baths and built a sauna at home to relieve stress 2-3 times a week.

Occasionally, taking a steam bath helps to refresh and relax the mind. However, doctors warn that overuse and frequent steam baths will affect male fertility. Many other prolonged activities can also increase testicular temperature such as frequent hot baths, continuous cycling, sitting at work for long periods, hot working environments... affecting fertility.
