MAG celebrates 25 years of operation in Vietnam

This afternoon, March 15th, in Dong Ha City, the MAG Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary in Vietnam. MAG Executive Director Cormack Darren William; MAG Country Director for Vietnam Sarah Goring; and representatives from embassies, organizations, and projects attended the ceremony. Representing Quang Tri province were Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam; and leaders from relevant departments, agencies, and units.

MAG is a non-governmental organization working in the field of humanitarian mine clearance in areas that have experienced or are experiencing conflict. Founded in the UK in 1989, MAG's work has so far brought safety and helped stabilize the lives of tens of millions of people in war-affected areas in more than 70 countries worldwide .

In Vietnam, the MAG organization began operating in Quang Tri in 1999, and later expanded its operations to Quang Binh and Quang Nam . Currently, MAG is one of the largest civilian mine clearance organizations in Vietnam.

Over 25 years of operation in Quang Tri, the MAG organization has completed the clearance of nearly 180 million square meters of land. During this process, the organization's staff have successfully discovered and detonated over 230,000 unexploded ordnance of various types, contributing to a safer life for nearly 700,000 people. The MAG organization has also conducted more than 1,000 communication and education activities on mine and unexploded ordnance prevention for nearly 15,000 people in various localities throughout the province.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam extended his congratulations to the delegates, officials, and staff of the MAG Organization on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in Vietnam. According to Vice Chairman Hoang Nam, over the past years, the MAG Organization has always been a close partner and collaborator with the government and people of Quang Tri province in implementing many activities.

Along with other mine action organizations, MAG has made a significant contribution to reducing landmine accidents, bringing safety to the lands and rural areas of Quang Tri. The goodwill, efforts, and meaningful contributions of the MAG organization to the province over the past 25 years have always been highly appreciated and recognized by the leaders and people of Quang Tri.

Expressing his deep gratitude to the MAG Organization, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam hoped that MAG, along with other mine action organizations, would continue to work alongside the province in the coming years to successfully address the consequences of landmines and chemical weapons left over from the war, contributing to promoting international cooperation and sustainable socio-economic development.

At the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam presented a certificate of commendation from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee to the MAG Organization for its positive contributions to post-war mine clearance in Quang Tri. A representative of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations presented a certificate of commendation from the Presidium of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations to the MAG Organization for its positive contributions to socio-economic development in Vietnam during the period 1999-2024.

On this occasion, the leaders of the MAG organization also commended and rewarded officers and staff who have made significant contributions to mine clearance and the remediation of war consequences.
