AP reported that President Talon on December 7 condemned the coup in Benin in his first public comments since gunfire rang out in some areas of Cotonou.

"I also want to express my condolences to the victims of this senseless incident, as well as those still being held by the escaped rebels. I assure them that we will do everything in our power to rescue them safely," President Talon said in a televised address to the nation.
President Talon did not release figures on casualties or hostages in the failed coup on December 7.
A small group of soldiers calling themselves the Military Committee for Reconstruction appeared on Benin state television and announced the dissolution of the government. Interior Minister Alassane Seidou later announced in a video posted on Facebook that the coup attempt had been "foiled" by the Benin armed forces. However, President Talon did not comment at the time.
"It took several hours for forces loyal to the Benin government , with Nigerian support, to regain control and dislodge the coup plotters from the national television station," Nigerian government spokesman Bayo Onanuga said, adding that the Benin government had made two separate requests for air and ground support.
Local media reported, citing sources close to the Benin president, that 13 soldiers involved in the coup in Benin were arrested on the morning of December 7.
