President Trump says he wants to close the US Department of Education immediately

President Donald Trump said on February 13 that he wants the Department of Education to close "immediately."

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump said: “I want to close it down immediately. The Department of Education is a big scam.” He said the US education system is ranked 40th in the world , but is number one in “cost of education per student.”

Last week, President Trump said he wanted to close the Department of Education through an executive order but needed support from Congress and teachers unions to fulfill his campaign pledge.

In January 2025, President Trump signed two executive orders on school funding that would give students the right to school choice. Dismantling the U.S. Department of Education could disrupt tens of billions of dollars in school funding and college tuition assistance.

President Trump has spent his first weeks in office pushing for major changes to the U.S. government, ordering federal workers to return to work in offices or leave, seeking to cut costs and trying to close agencies like the U.S. Agency for International Development. The Department of Education is also on Trump's top target list.

Previously, Mr. Trump said he had assigned Ms. Linda McMahon, his choice for Secretary of Education, to close the department.

Trump has proposed closing the Department of Education during his first term, which runs from 2017 to 2021, but Congress has not acted. The agency employs 4,245 people and spent $251 billion in the most recent fiscal year. The department also manages $1.6 trillion in student loans, the third-largest source of debt in the United States.
