Situation in the town of Avdiivka

Updating the war situation on November 4, the British Ministry of Defense said that in the past 3 weeks, Russia likely lost about 200 armored vehicles during the campaign in the town of Avdiivka (Donetsk).

According to the UK, this is thanks to Ukraine's effective coordination in the use of armor-piercing shoulder-fired weapons, mines, lethal unmanned vehicles and high-precision artillery systems. The UK predicts that Russia is adjusting its tactics here after a period of disadvantage.

Russia did not comment on the above assessments. However, on the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had intercepted nine missiles of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and shot down 43 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of Ukraine on multiple fronts in 24 hours, according to TASS. In addition, Russia also said it had destroyed German-made Leopard 2 tanks in the fighting in Donetsk.

The above information about Leopard 2 was mentioned by Russia after Forbes Magazine reported that the Ukrainian armed forces have recently continuously lost Leopard 2 tanks.

In just over a week, at least 12 Leopard 2A4, Leopard 2A6 and Stridsvagn 122 tanks were disabled by Russia. Of these, Stridsvagn 122 is the Swedish version of Leopard 2A5.

Ukraine has not commented on this information.

Is there a problem within the Ukrainian military?

Also on November 4, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that he had proposed replacing General Viktor Khorenko as Commander of the special forces.

After President Zelensky dismissed Mr. Khorenko and appointed Colonel Serhii Lupanchuk to the command position, General Khorenko said he only learned about his replacement when he read the newspaper. The Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian army, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, was unable to explain to him the reason for his dismissal.

However, Roman Mashovets, Deputy Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine, later told Ukrainska Pravda that President Zelensky had received a request from Minister Umerov, and therefore fully complied with security regulations.

Lack of soldiers makes it difficult for Ukraine to effectively use Western equipment

General Khorenko's departure came after Chief of the General Staff Zaluzhnyi made a gloomy assessment of the war situation in the Economist .

In an editorial published on November 1, General Zaluzhnyi warned that the Russia-Ukraine conflict was moving into a "stalemate" phase, which could allow Russia to regain its military strength. He also doubted Ukraine's ability to achieve victory in its counteroffensive, and called on the West to increase its assistance to Ukraine.

On November 4, the Office of the President of Ukraine criticized the editorial, saying that General Zaluzhnyi had gone too far in revealing the situation on the fronts to the public.

Ukrainian president denies stalemate

Responding to General Zaluzhnyi's comments, President Zelensky on November 4 denied that the conflict with Russia was at a stalemate, denying that Western leaders were lobbying for peace talks.

"Time passes, everyone is tired... but it is not a deadlock," AFP quoted Mr. Zelensky as saying at a press conference in Kyiv with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The leader also denied rumors that Western countries were increasing pressure on Kyiv to push ahead with negotiations with Russia.

“None of our partners are pressuring us to sit down with Russia, negotiate and make concessions,” he stressed.

Ukraine allies reveal Russia's 'most effective' new weapon

As the war in Ukraine enters its 21st month, Mr. Zelensky said the Hamas-Israel conflict is diverting attention from Ukraine, and that is "Russia's goal."

For her part, Ms von der Leyen is in Kyiv to discuss Ukraine's accession to the European Union. "You have made many breakthroughs," the European Commission President told President Zelensky.

According to her, Ukraine should continue to promote reform of the judicial system, eliminate oligarchs' clans, fight money laundering and make many other efforts.

The EU Commission has proposed an additional €50 billion to support Ukraine until 2027. By November 8, the commission must complete and submit a report on Ukraine's reform progress as well as potential candidates such as Moldova and Georgia.
