The above information was announced by Binh Duong General Hospital on December 5.
Accordingly, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has just awarded certificates of merit to three groups and one individual of the hospital, in recognition of their outstanding achievements in a rare special surgery: temporarily maintaining and reattaching a severed hand to a patient carrying 34-week-old twins.
Letters of commendation and certificates of merit from the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City were awarded to Binh Duong General Hospital, the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics, the Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation, and individual Dr. Vo Thai Trung, in charge of the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics.

Previously in September, patient Le Ngoc P. was admitted to the hospital with a crushed lower third of his forearm and a completely severed right hand due to a work accident. The patient was pregnant with twins, and the health of the mother and fetus was at risk.
To preserve as much living tissue as possible and facilitate the reattachment surgery later, the surgical team decided to temporarily graft the severed hand onto the right leg, maintaining continuous blood flow for nearly two months. This is a rare, complex microsurgical technique that requires close monitoring and multidisciplinary coordination.
On November 28, doctors from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, in coordination with the Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and many related units, performed a 13-hour surgery to separate the hand from the temporary graft site and reattach it to its original anatomical position.
The vascular - tendon - nerve system is re-established with extremely sophisticated microsurgical techniques, ensuring blood circulation to the transplanted limb, while continuously monitoring fetal activity throughout the surgery.

After surgery, the patient's hand was warm and pink, had light movement and continued to be rehabilitated according to the protocol.
In a letter of commendation to the team, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Tran Luu Quang assessed this as a success of profound human significance, demonstrating professional qualifications, good coordination between departments and the heart of the doctor.
Ho Chi Minh City leaders praised the spirit of dedication and expected the team to continue to innovate and improve their professional capacity to serve the people better and better.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, said that the success of the surgery was the result of collective efforts, adhering to strict professional procedures, racing every minute to save the patient's limb. This is a great motivation for the medical industry in the journey of developing specialized techniques.

In addition to rewarding the doctors, the delegation of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also visited the health, gave 10 million VND and a gift of encouragement to the pregnant woman, to add spiritual motivation during the patient's treatment and recovery process, after the successful hand reattachment surgery.
