The qualifying rounds began in the morning with a series of top swimmers: Pham Thi Van, Nguyen Thuy Hien (women's 100m freestyle), Mai Tran Tuan Anh (men's 1,500m freestyle), Vo Thi My Tien and Nguyen Kha Nhi (women's 400m freestyle).

By afternoon, the swimming arena promises to be explosive as Nguyen Huy Hoang makes his first sprint in his specialty event, the 1,500m freestyle – where he holds the SEA Games record. Tran Hung Nguyen and Nguyen Quang Thuan will also face the challenge of the 400m individual medley, raising hopes of extending Vietnam's swimming gold medal tally.

Besides swimming, athletics and martial arts also have many medal events on December 12th. These are all events where Vietnamese athletes have the potential to reach the finals and compete for gold medals.
