On average, Vietnamese consumers shop online up to four times a month. This demonstrates the significant potential of the online wholesale and retail market.
B2C revenue surpasses $25 billion.
On the afternoon of December 25th, in Hanoi, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), in collaboration with the Department of Digital Economy and Digital Society (Ministry of Information and Communications), the Vietnam E-commerce Association, and other relevant units, organized a workshop on the development of the digital economy in the industry and trade sector with the theme "Promoting the application of e-commerce and digital transformation in the wholesale and retail sectors".
| The workshop "Promoting the application of e-commerce and digital transformation in the wholesale and retail sectors" attracted the attention of experts and businesses. |
Speaking at the conference, Ms. Lai Viet Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy , assessed: In recent years, e-commerce in Vietnam has affirmed its pioneering role in the digital economy. Although the global and regional economies are still facing many challenges, Vietnam's e-commerce continues to maintain an impressive growth rate of 18-25% per year. In 2024, the B2C revenue scale will exceed 25 billion USD.
“ The wholesale and retail sectors continue to play a crucial role in the supply chain, supporting the flow of goods from production to consumption, creating jobs for workers, and contributing to economic development ,” Ms. Lai Viet Anh emphasized.
Survey data shows that, on average, Vietnamese consumers shop online up to 4 times a month. With a market of nearly 100 million people, accounting for 1.23% of the world's population, and situated next to large markets such as China, India, and ASEAN, Vietnam's potential for e-commerce development is enormous.
According to statistics, Vietnam currently has 1.4 million grocery stores, nearly 9,000 traditional markets, 54,008 retail businesses, and 208,995 wholesale businesses. Of these, grocery stores, traditional markets, and retail businesses account for 3.91% of net production and business revenue and 3.19% of total employment; the revenue of the 208,995 wholesale businesses accounts for approximately 27.60% and about 8.76% of the total workforce in the wholesale sector.
This demonstrates the importance of wholesale and retail in economic development and job creation. Therefore, supporting the digital transformation of wholesale and retail cannot be delayed and needs to be accelerated, moving all wholesale activities, businesses, grocery stores, and retail outlets from the physical environment to the digital environment to reach customers through various digital channels, delivering higher value and efficiency.
Discussing this issue, experts and digital transformation solution providers share the common view that digital transformation in the retail industry is rapidly changing how consumers engage in shopping. Online shopping, online payments, and the sale of essential goods in the electronic environment have gradually become familiar tasks in modern life.
Strengthening digital transformation to develop the digital economy.
According to information presented at the workshop, the organizers announced that, in order to help wholesale and retail businesses accelerate digital transformation, in September 2024, the Ministry of Information and Communications selected Phu Nhuan District (Ho Chi Minh City) as the pilot location for the main activities of the program to support retail stores in digital transformation.
The program's objectives are to select and mobilize outstanding digital platforms to participate, with preferential policies and support for businesses, stores, and household businesses; to ensure that 100% of businesses, stores, and household retail businesses nationwide have access to and participate in surveys and assessments of their digital transformation levels; to ensure that 100% of businesses, stores, and household retail businesses that participated in the surveys and assessments of their digital transformation levels nationwide experience the digital platforms for digital transformation; and to create and update a database on digital transformation of businesses, stores, and household retail businesses nationwide.
Besides the advantages shared at the workshop, many opinions indicated that businesses still face numerous difficulties in digital transformation, such as the cost of purchasing software, the reluctance of small businesses to switch, and a lack of coordination with relevant authorities…
Proposing solutions to this problem, Ms. Do Nhat Uyen from Misa Company suggested that a clear plan and roadmap for implementation are needed; inter-agency teams should be established between the government and suppliers to facilitate the transition process for businesses…
To overcome the difficulties encountered in the pilot units, several recommendations were made: Businesses supporting the implementation need to strengthen the connection between management at all levels and between businesses and local stores. At the same time, the approach should be changed by organizing direct consultations and support in the area, mobilizing participation from local organizations and those directly working with the local community (e.g., neighborhood group leaders, associations, etc.) to increase trust and build confidence among businesses participating in the program's activities.
Another noteworthy piece of information from the workshop is that, following a pilot program to support wholesale and retail trade, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Industry and Trade have agreed to cooperate with localities and solution providers to expand the program in 2025.
| In order to expand the model to businesses and grocery stores in other provinces and cities, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy will continue to coordinate and promote the implementation with the Ministry of Information and Communications of the tasks in Decision No. 1437/QD-TTg dated November 20, 2024, on the National Action Plan on Digital Economy Development for the period 2024-2025. |
