(CLO) A 62-year-old man named Fan Weiqiu has been sentenced to death after driving his car into a crowd at a sports center in Zhuhai city, southern China, killing 35 people.
The attack occurred around 8 p.m. on November 11th, when Fan Weiqiu drove an off-road vehicle into people exercising at the Zhuhai Sports Center. The court concluded that Fan's actions stemmed from anger over his failed marriage and dissatisfaction with what he considered an unfair divorce ruling.

Fan's car sped through the stadium, crashing into dozens of people exercising on the running track. After the attack, police found Fan in the car, attempting to self-harm with a knife, and took him to the hospital.
The Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court sentenced Fan Weiqiu to death on December 27. Fan had previously pleaded guilty at trial. According to the verdict, Fan's actions were described as "despicable, exceptionally brutal in nature, and extremely ruthless in execution."
Chinese President Xi Jinping condemned the attack as “extremely heinous” and demanded severe punishment, according to China Central Television (CCTV).
This was the deadliest attack since 2014, when a series of attacks occurred in the Xinjiang region. A few days earlier, a court in Hunan province also handed down a suspended death sentence to a man who drove a car into a crowd outside a primary school, injuring 30 people, including 18 students.
