On December 12, senior officials of the Asia -Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum unanimously approved China's proposal to prioritize Openness, Innovation, and Cooperation as the three priorities for APEC's "Year of China," and the theme "Building a Shared Asia-Pacific Community."
The decision was made at the APEC Informal Senior Officials Meeting (ISOM), held in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, southern China.
The APEC and ISOM Symposium, held on December 11 and 12, marked the first event hosted by China as the host country of the 33rd APEC Summit, launching APEC's "Year of China". The symposium was attended by nearly 200 representatives from APEC member economies , the secretariat, observers, academia, and business.
Speaking at the ISOM, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said that at the APEC meeting held last November in Gyeongju (South Korea), Chinese leaders expressed their desire to cooperate with all parties to build a shared Asia- Pacific community, promote the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area, and foster practical cooperation in connectivity, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The conference participants appreciated China's efforts and expressed their readiness to actively support China's hosting of the APEC Summit in 2026, jointly promoting the success of APEC's "Year of China" and making new contributions to promoting economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
The APEC and ISOM symposiums also confirmed the schedule of meetings for the year.
APEC is the most important economic cooperation mechanism in the Asia-Pacific region.
The 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in Shenzhen in November 2026, while the APEC Senior Officials Meeting and Ministerial Meeting will take place in various cities across China.
