Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy aims to be in the top of Asia

This is one of the important goals announced at the 2nd Congress of the Party Committee of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, term 2025-2030, which took place on August 15. Attending the congress were Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Can Tho City; Mr. Nguyen Tri Thuc, Deputy Minister of Health and 250 delegates representing more than 1,300 Party members of the school.

Become a national key university

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Minh Phuong, Chairman of the University Council, in the 2025-2030 term, the university will focus on promoting all resources to become a key national university, expand training and research facilities, establish specialized research centers and digital medical data centers.

To realize the aspiration of reaching Asia, the Party Committee of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy has identified 3 main breakthroughs in the 2025-2030 term.

That is to innovate university governance, apply modern and advanced governance models, strongly apply science and technology, and digital transformation in all activities, from training to scientific research. Next is to develop high-quality human resources through investing in modern facilities, building a team of cadres and lecturers according to international standards, aiming to join the network of leading universities in the region. In particular, to strengthen the leadership role of the Party by innovating political and ideological education, promoting collective strength to build comprehensive human resources, meeting new requirements.

Three strategic directions to achieve big goals

Speaking at the congress, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee, made three strategic proposals to create strong motivation for the school.

Firstly, research to soon implement the mechanism of co-institutional lecturers to more effectively exploit the contributions of highly qualified doctors from practicing hospitals to participate in training, sign contracts, and appoint professors and associate professors from prestigious foreign training institutions. Secondly, innovate the curriculum in a competency-based direction, enhance practical training and apply a combined training model (direct and online). Thirdly, research to develop a family medicine doctor model to meet the primary health care needs of Can Tho and the Mekong Delta people as well as the whole country in the coming time.

Currently, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy is training 12 undergraduate majors and 88 postgraduate majors (6 doctoral training majors, 11 master training majors, 32 specialty I training majors, 23 specialty II training majors and 16 residency training majors). The school has implemented medical training in English, completing international training targets. The school hospital has also deployed many specialized techniques, achieving high bed capacity, affirming its role as an important medical center of the region to meet the treatment needs of the people with an average bed capacity of 96.4%, while the target is over 85%.
