Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy aims to be among the top universities in Asia.

This is one of the important goals announced at the 2nd Party Congress of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, term 2025-2030, held on August 15th. Attending the congress were Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Can Tho City; Mr. Nguyen Tri Thuc, Deputy Minister of Health; and 250 delegates representing over 1,300 Party members of the university's Party Committee.

To become a national key university

According to Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Minh Phuong, Chairman of the University Council, during the 2025-2030 term, the university will focus on leveraging all resources to become a key national university, expanding training and research facilities, establishing specialized research centers and a digital medical data center.

To realize its aspiration to reach Asian prominence, the Party Committee of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy has identified three main breakthroughs for the 2025-2030 term.

This involves reforming university governance, adopting modern and advanced governance models, strongly applying science and technology, and digital transformation in all activities, from training to scientific research. Next is the development of high-quality human resources through investment in modern infrastructure, building a team of faculty and staff according to international standards, aiming to join the network of leading universities in the region. Especially, it involves strengthening the leadership role of the Party by reforming political and ideological education, and leveraging collective strength to build well-rounded individuals who meet new requirements.

Three strategic directions for achieving big goals.

Speaking at the congress, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee, put forward three strategic proposals that would create strong momentum for the school.

Firstly, research should be conducted to implement a co-full-time faculty mechanism to more effectively utilize the contributions of highly qualified physicians from teaching hospitals in training, contracting and appointing them to professorships and associate professorships from prestigious foreign training institutions. Secondly, the curriculum should be reformed towards a competency-based approach, strengthening practical training and applying a blended learning model (in-person and online). Thirdly, research should be conducted to develop a family medicine doctor model to meet the primary healthcare needs of the people of Can Tho and the Mekong Delta, as well as the whole country in general, in the coming time.

Currently, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy offers 12 undergraduate and 88 postgraduate programs (6 doctoral programs, 11 master's programs, 32 specialist training programs (level I), 23 specialist training programs (level II), and 16 residency programs). The university has implemented medical training in English, achieving its international training targets. The university hospital has also implemented many advanced techniques, achieving a high bed occupancy rate, affirming its role as an important medical center in the region, meeting the treatment needs of the people with an average bed occupancy rate of 96.4%, while the target is over 85%.
