Improvisational performance

Speaking to reporters on the morning of July 31, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh said he was surprised by the widespread sharing of the video . Over the past few days, he has received many messages inquiring about his health from students and colleagues.

"It was a completely impromptu performance, with no prior preparation. Initially, everyone planned to sing karaoke, but then they saw a guitar and spontaneously played and sang to create a more intimate and friendly atmosphere. Moreover, the guitar is also a part of our youth," shared Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh.

Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh said this wasn't the first time he'd played the piano in front of a large audience, but he still felt a little shy because he hadn't prepared thoroughly. In previous years, on November 20th, Dr. Trinh and his students often had impromptu musical performances.

"The students sang the song 'Dust of Chalk,' and I played the piano accompaniment for them. My piano playing isn't great, but the class loved it and kept laughing. Besides the stressful study sessions, the students also need to relax, and if possible, I still want to be involved with my students," Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh shared with a bright smile.

The video of Professor Le Ba Khanh Trinh has been shared by many of his students on social media.

My students are my motivation!

Although retired, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh will continue to work with the Gifted High School as an advisor in the training of gifted students.

"I find joy in teaching, in each generation of my students. The only difference is that after retirement, I have more time to travel and teach in many provinces and cities than before. My students are my motivation, and I will continue this work as long as I have the health," Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh confided.

When asked about his plans to write a book, Professor Trinh said that this is also something that the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City is very interested in. However, he has not been able to do so yet because he is not satisfied with the quality of the materials he has compiled.

Professor Trinh confided: "Looking back at the research topics, for example, out of 10 topics, only about 3 are truly satisfactory to me. The remaining topics need further revision and improvement. I think I will only start writing when everything is truly good and I feel ready."

Throughout his tenure as head of the mathematics department at the High School for the Gifted, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh led the mathematics team to achieve many outstanding accomplishments, including 171 national student excellence awards and 19 international Olympic medals.

Having been together for over 40 years, from their days studying together in the Mathematics Department at Moscow State University (Russia) to their return to Vietnam and working together under the same roof, Dr. Tran Nam Dung, Vice Principal of the High School for the Gifted, commented that Mr. Trinh is a very humble, simple person with a strong sense of responsibility towards his work.

"Mr. Trinh was my idol and that of many others when I was in school. To this day, he remains a legend of Vietnamese mathematics and the High School for the Gifted," Dr. Dung expressed.

Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh, born in 1962 in Hue , won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1979 and a special prize for his unique solution.

To date, Dr. Trinh is the only Vietnamese person to have received this award. Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh officially retired in March 2025.
