From a resettlement area to a new economic hotspot at the gateway to Tuyen Quang.

TPO - From a poor resettlement area at the gateway to Tuyen Quang province, Nhu Khe commune is becoming a new economic bright spot, where the story of sustainable poverty reduction is being written through perseverance, a change in mindset, and the efforts of each household.

The morning in Nhữ Khê begins with the faint scent of young tea leaves carried on the breeze. Few would imagine that this gateway to Tuyên Quang province was once a place of immense hardship for the families resettled due to the hydroelectric project. Starting from nothing, the entire commune is now undergoing a remarkable transformation: modern roads, a shift towards commercial agriculture , improved livelihoods, and increasingly open opportunities to escape poverty.

The story begins in 2007, when families moved from the hydroelectric reservoir area to Cay Thi village. In this new land, everything had to be rebuilt from scratch. After more than two decades, the wide concrete road leading into the village and the rows of houses speak volumes about the enduring transformation. The family of Mr. Giang A Lenh is a prime example. Having been allocated land for production and provided with breeding cattle, he dedicated his efforts to planting 5,000 square meters of acacia and eucalyptus trees and raising breeding cows. Just one year later, the herd was expecting calves, marking the first milestone in his journey towards a sustainable escape from poverty.

Not far away, Mr. Giang A Sy chose to develop his economy by raising cattle for commercial purposes. Borrowing 50 million VND from the Social Policy Bank, he built barns, planted grass, and cared for his herd using trained techniques. As a result, the herd thrived. In 2024 alone, he sold four cows, earning 70 million VND. This was enough money to build a new house and change his life. In Cay Thi now, such stories of overcoming hardship are no longer rare. 32 breeding cows from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction have been provided to households, creating a significant boost to the livelihoods of the people.

The lush green tea hills offer stable production opportunities, while also creating potential for ecotourism and agricultural experiences in Nhu Khe.

The village of Cay Thi currently has 83 households, with over 30 being relocated households. Although there are still 24 poor households and 11 near-poor households, according to the village Party Secretary, the well-invested infrastructure, from clean water to transportation and irrigation canals, provides a foundation for people to confidently engage in production and gradually improve their lives.

Beyond livestock farming, Nhữ Khê also impresses with its development of commercial agriculture. The commune boasts over 360 hectares of tea plantations, yielding more than 3,350 tons annually; nearly 160 hectares of fruit trees; and a herd of over 414,000 livestock and poultry. The lush green tea hills offer a stable production direction, while also creating potential for ecotourism and agricultural experiences.

Another highlight is the application of high technology. Thanks to funding from the Foreign Capital Project Management Board, Nhu Khe has installed an automatic irrigation system on over 40 hectares of tea plantations and replaced the old varieties with new ones on over 20 hectares. Mr. Le Van Toi, from Hamlet 5, shared: “This year, my family harvested nearly 20 tons of fresh tea leaves, earning a profit of about 80 million VND thanks to the automatic sprinkler irrigation.” This figure is clear evidence of the effectiveness of technologically advanced production.

Thanks to its advantageous location along the Tuyen Quang – Phu Tho – Ha Giang expressway, Nhu Khe is becoming a bright spot attracting investment. The Mimosa golf course, ecological zones, urban areas, and industrial clusters in Nhu Khe, with a total investment of thousands of billions of VND, are opening up strong development prospects and creating more jobs for the local people.

To create local jobs, the commune encouraged the opening of six garment factories, attracting more than 250 workers – mainly poor and near-poor people – with an income of 7-8 million VND/month. According to Tran Van Tuyen, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, encouraging private sector development and supporting startups is the "link" that helps people access new ways of doing things and create sustainable income sources.

Currently, the average income in Nhữ Khê reaches 55 million VND/person/year; the poverty rate has decreased to 4.2%, striving to reach only about 2% by the end of 2025. This gateway region of Tuyên Quang is transforming day by day: greener with tea hills, more stable thanks to breeding cattle, and more vibrant with the influx of investment capital.
