This event took place against the backdrop of the city accelerating many large-scale infrastructure projects such as Ring Road 2, Ring Road 3, Ring Road 4, the Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai expressway, and the Thu Dau Mot - Chon Thanh expressway. At the 6th session of the 10th term of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, the issue of urban transport development, especially new metro lines, received great attention from voters and delegates.

Mr. Tran Quang Lam, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, said that the city is preparing a comprehensive strategy to complete the transportation network according to the plan. In this strategy, urban rail is considered a fundamental solution to reduce pressure on the road system and create new impetus for urban development.
The implementation of National Assembly Resolution 188 has opened up a streamlined mechanism for metro projects, helping to accelerate the preparation process. As a result, the Ben Thanh - Can Gio metro line has achieved "record" progress, from the initial concept at the Ho Chi Minh City planning announcement conference in January 2025, to the investor completing the report by March 2025; the city submitting the proposal to the Government in April 2025; and the project receiving investment approval in early December 2025.
According to the plan, Ho Chi Minh City is finalizing its funding plan to achieve the goal of essentially completing its road and urban rail transport system by 2030. Following the Ben Thanh - Can Gio line, Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) is expected to begin construction in January 2026. Between 2025 and 2030, the city aims to build approximately 180km of metro lines, increasing this to 480km by 2035.
The metro lines prioritized for investment until 2030 include Ben Thanh - Tham Luong, Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem, Thu Thiem - Long Thanh, Ben Thanh - Can Gio, and the connecting line between Binh Duong and Suoi Tien. These are considered crucial frameworks for addressing traffic congestion, expanding urban space, and connecting the Southeast region.
The Ben Thanh - Can Gio metro line, once operational, will provide a modern mode of transportation, connecting the city center with the Can Gio coastal area, which is being developed into an eco-tourism city. The metro line is expected to operate from 6 AM to 11 PM daily, with a frequency of 20 minutes per trip. The project's operating period is 70 years, starting from the date of investment approval.
The rapid preparation process of the project is creating high expectations among residents and businesses. Many experts believe that this is not just a step forward for a single metro line, but a signal that Ho Chi Minh City's transportation infrastructure has entered an "acceleration" phase, aiming to complete the metro network by 2030-2035. The success of the Ben Thanh - Can Gio project is expected to create a ripple effect, reinforcing confidence in the city's public transportation development strategy.
