This afternoon, January 11th, at VinUni University, there was a conversation with Professor J. Larry Jameson, Acting President of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). When asked about opportunities for access to high-quality higher education for young people with limited financial resources, Professor Jameson stated that, specifically for UPenn, the door is always open for talented students by providing tuition assistance to students from low-income families.

Professor J. Larry Jameson, Acting President of the University of Pennsylvania, speaks at VinUni University on the afternoon of January 11th.

Professor Jameson stated that 30 years ago, UPenn students knew about this prestigious university, one of the oldest in the United States, primarily because they had relatives who had studied there. However, in this day and age, thanks to the internet, information easily spreads to every corner of the globe. Therefore, UPenn students today come not only from all over the United States but also from distant countries like Vietnam, or less developed countries like Uganda (a poor country in Africa).

"We asked the students how they learned about UPenn. The answers were through online sources and through friends around the world ," Professor Jameson said.

According to Professor Jameson, typically, to get into UPenn or any other prestigious university, students must not only know about it but also overcome financial barriers. However, 285 years ago, when UPenn was founded, Dr. Benjamin Franklin always emphasized that the selection criteria for students should be based on merit and potential, not financial capability.

"When evaluating applicants, we look at their abilities, potential, and aspirations, not just their financial capacity. To ensure funding for quality higher education, we raise capital and seek sponsorships to open financial aid programs and scholarships for students who do not have sufficient financial resources to participate," Professor Jameson shared.

According to Professor Jameson, UPenn currently has a policy of providing tuition assistance to students whose household income is below $22,000 per year. This is a significant effort because previously the required household income for students was much lower.

Position Which is an excellent university?

During the conversation, Professor Jameson also advised students on how to train themselves so that they can contribute more positive values to society in the future. "The important thing is to find a mentor, a good role model to follow. This sometimes takes time. But I believe all faculty members are willing to support students, not only in their studies but also in developing skills and qualities to improve themselves," Professor Jameson said.

Professor Jameson also shared his perspective on what constitutes an excellent university: "The core element is the quality of the faculty. Top-performing universities are distinguished by their outstanding faculty and professors, who are leading experts and talented individuals from around the world. For me personally, it is the excellent students who motivate me to become even better. The initial ideas from students are often the inspiration for the new research and inventions we develop."

Professor J. Larry Jameson has been the Acting President of UPenn since December 2023. He is a leading physician and endocrinologist , receiving numerous prestigious awards, including the Van Meter Award from the American Thyroid Association, the Koch Award from the Endocrine Society, and the Sheen Award from the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Academy of Sciences and Arts as well as the National Institutes of Medicine.

Professor Jameson is visiting Vietnam this time as a member of the University of Pennsylvania delegation at VinUni University; the two sides have been collaborating for the past 7 years.

"We had thorough discussions about the future roadmap. It is commendable that VinUni has clearly defined its development pace and strategy, while upholding its original founding values – that is, bringing positive value to the community and society," Professor Jameson commented.
