V-League increases relegation rate
The new thing in V-League 2025 - 2026 is that there will be 2 direct relegation slots, for the teams ranked 13th and 14th.
Unlike previous seasons when there were only 1.5 relegation spots (1 direct spot and 1 play-off spot), next season's V-League will be more competitive and fierce, when there will definitely be 2 teams that have to say goodbye to the tournament.
According to Vice President in charge of professional affairs of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Tran Anh Tu, increasing the number of clubs directly relegated will push teams to play more aggressively, avoiding the situation where some teams are said to be "loose-footed" and play... affectionately as rumored by fans in many past seasons.

"With two direct relegation slots in both the V-League and the first division, the tournament will be much more attractive, avoiding the situation where some teams no longer play as actively as expected when they have enough points," VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu affirmed. "If the teams do not play their best, fans will notice and their trust in the clubs will be shaken. The clubs themselves will be affected if they do not play their best."
In V-League 2024 - 2025, Binh Dinh Club finished at the bottom of the table and was directly relegated, while Da Nang Club won a play-off spot thanks to a series of victories over SLNA, Quang Nam , Thanh Hoa... in the final stage. The unbeaten streak helped Da Nang escape the bottom of the table, then beat Binh Phuoc in the play-off match to stay in the league.
'Some referees rely on VAR'
VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu added that V-League 2025 - 2026 is expected to have 5 VAR vehicles, an increase of 1 vehicle compared to the previous season. The additional VAR vehicles are expected to be deployed in the Central region, to serve matches on the fields of Da Nang , HAGL, Quang Nam or SLNA clubs.
"Last season, the V-League organizing committee had 4 VAR vehicles. Thanks to that, all matches in the same round in the V-League, some matches in the first division and the National Cup all had VAR. The exception was that there were rounds where 7 matches took place at the same time last season, which led to some matches not having VAR. However, in such matches, we have plans to use experienced referees and foreign referees to ensure quality. VFF and VPF are planning to buy 1 more VAR vehicle to serve matches in the Central region to serve the matches here," Mr. Tran Anh Tu affirmed.

According to Mr. Tran Anh Tu, V-League referees need to be "improved" in quality, as some people rely heavily on VAR. VFF and VPF plan to continue to promote referee training sessions, inviting referee instructors from the World Football Federation (FIFA) to help Vietnamese referees update new knowledge, master their expertise, and avoid unnecessary controversies that affect the image of the tournament.
"Over the past years, VPF has trained referees. We plan to invite FIFA lecturers to train and practice the 'judging' team. However, it must be admitted that there are still some referees who depend on VAR, leading to a lack of initiative in situations, always tending to rely on VAR to intervene," VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu emphasized.
Mr. Tran Anh Tu affirmed that VFF and VPF will have plans to support teams such as Nam Dinh Club and Hanoi Police Club (CAHN Club) such as changing the competition schedule and giving rewards, to help Vietnamese representatives play well in international playgrounds.
"VFF and VPF always have incentive rewards for teams with good results if they win matches and make it to the next round. We coordinate with the clubs to adjust the match schedule for teams that go deep, helping teams have the conditions to compete in international tournaments. Of course, the adjustment will not affect other teams. Last season, the tight match schedule, combined with a scientific arrangement, helped the tournament be a great success," Mr. Tran Anh Tu assessed.
This season, Nam Dinh Club and CAHN Club will simultaneously compete in the AFC Champions League 2 (Asian Cup C2) and ASEAN Club Championship (Southeast Asian Cup C1).
