On September 5th, the UN General Assembly adopted a Resolution on preparing for the High-Level Meeting on Disease Prevention and Control, co-chaired and coordinated by Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, and Ambassador Paula Narvaez, Head of the Permanent Mission of Chile to the UN.
According to the Resolution, the High-Level Conference on Epidemic Prevention and Control will take place in September 2026 at UN headquarters in New York during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, with the theme "Promoting a multilateral and intergenerational approach to the prevention, preparedness and response to pandemics and health emergencies, based on the principles of equity and solidarity".
The resolution also encourages broad participation, at the highest level, of member states, international organizations, non- governmental organizations, academics, the private sector, and the community to share and exchange lessons learned and enhance global cooperation in disease prevention and control.

The newly adopted resolution underscores the urgent need to enhance preparedness for future global health emergencies and emphasizes a comprehensive approach that mobilizes all government agencies and society as a whole to achieve this goal.
The resolution calls for strengthening multilateral commitments, promoting close cooperation between member states and UN agencies, particularly the World Health Organization (WHO), and affirms the need to ensure the equitable and timely development, distribution, and access to vaccines to overcome shortcomings in disease prevention, preparedness, and response.
The designation of Vietnam as co-coordinator of the Resolution by the President of the UN General Assembly is a recognition and expression of the international community's trust in Vietnam's achievements and positive contributions to the global fight against the pandemic in recent times.
Speaking at the session, Vice President of the UN General Assembly Gheorghe Leucă, on behalf of the member states, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Ambassadors of Vietnam and Chile for their proactive and extensive consultations, which significantly contributed to the preparation process for this important and meaningful summit.
