The play "Once Upon a Time" is adapted from ancient Vietnamese folk tales and legends (dating back to 300 BC) and directed by French director Quentin Delorme.
The French Institute in Vietnam and the ATH Theatre and Arts Workshop will present the play " Once Upon a Time," performed by French and Vietnamese artists, at 8 PM on September 21st and 5 PM on September 22nd at the Alexandre Yersin International French School (44 Gia Thuong Street, Ngoc Thuy Ward, Long Bien District, Hanoi ).
In the past, the play was primarily inspired by three folk tales: the God of the Sky Pillar (a legend about the origin of the world), the Dragon and the Immortal Descendants (a story about the birth of Vietnamese society), and the Legend of Betel and Areca (illustrating the fundamental connection between humans and nature).
These three legends combine to create a colorful performance, in which each story unfolds in turn and resonates with the others.
Taken from the book "One Night Pond and Other Vietnamese Legends" by writer Tran Huy Minh, these three mythical tales are still passed down today and share a striking commonality: a harmonious blend of imagination, the supernatural, and realism.
Driven by the idea of a form of popular theater that offers cultural and educational opportunities to everyone, French director Quentin Delorme aims to take audiences on a magical and wondrous journey through a theatrical work suitable for all ages thanks to its diverse and innovative forms of expression.
The performance brings together Vietnamese and French artists with the aim of combining two languages, two cultures, aesthetic trends, and their historical and contemporary perspectives. Through this experimental theatrical space, the two cultures are subtly blended.
Director Quentin Delorme stated: "Through recreating the legend of Au Co, the formation of West Lake, or Thach Mon mountain peak... I aspire to bring the audience back to the roots of a richer, more communal, and humane culture."
By recreating three classic legends, fundamental to Vietnamese culture, I also want to highlight the striking similarities between Vietnamese culture and other cultures around the world .
Legends are a binding, universal, and enduring element. I believe they are epic, wondrous, and amazing "weapons" that allow for the creation of a more universal culture.
In the past , everyone could find themselves reflected in the play, whether the audience came from Vietnam, France, or other countries, whether they were children or adults, and regardless of their social status, because the play utilized global cultural norms: music, video presentations, comics, puppetry, Greek tragedy…
Therefore, the work will be an exciting and fascinating journey, delivered through a variety of artistic forms of expression.
Director Quentin Delorme graduated from the prestigious Cours Florent (Paris) drama school in France. From 2003 to 2010, he was the director of a theater company and worked in many countries including France, Vietnam, Morocco, Italy, and Belgium. As the winner of the "Young Parisian Talent" award in 2008, he also participated in the founding and management of the "Le Sans Plomb" cultural center in Ivry sur Seine (France). In 2010, together with Marianne Seguin, he founded ATH (Theatre and Arts Studio) in Vietnam, emphasizing self-development through performing arts. Driven by the idea of a popular and humanistic theatrical stage, his creations are a journey of searching for new forms of artistic expression while offering a different perspective on the nature of humanity and the world around us. |
