The second largest orange orchard in Nghe An failed, fruits fell in large numbers

It is currently the orange harvest season, but people in the orange growing area of Quang Dong commune cannot hide their sadness. Due to the impact of two storms No. 5 and No. 10, oranges fell en masse right before harvest time, causing the whole region to fall into a serious crop failure. The output has decreased sharply compared to previous years, pushing orange growers into a failed crop.

Ms. Phan Thi Su, a large orange grower in Dong Trung hamlet, Quang Dong commune, sadly shared: 80% of her family's 4.8-hectare orange garden is Xa Doai orange with yellow heart - a specialty orange variety favored by the market. After two big storms No. 5 and 10, the whole garden was blown away by the wind, branches were broken, some trees were even uprooted and had to be propped up again. "Last season, my family harvested 35 tons, this year we are lucky to only get about 15 tons. Oranges are falling all the time, I dare not promise customers who order for New Year's Eve because I don't know if there will be enough oranges to deliver or not" - Ms. Su sadly said.

Not far away, Mr. Nguyen Huu Khanh in Dong Tro hamlet is also busy collecting the remaining oranges on an area of 3 hectares. He said that the recent storm has stripped many trees of their leaves and small fruits, while others were flooded, making the roots weak and difficult to recover. "Currently, the oranges are ripe, but the fruits are still falling every day. Last season, I harvested 30 tons, this year at best, I can get 10 tons. This year's oranges are priced well, about 50,000 VND/kg, but the crop failed, so I can't make up for it," Mr. Khanh shared.

Not only are farmers worried about the sharp decline in output, they also face long-term concerns: the restoration of the Xa Doai orange variety - a famous but very difficult variety - could take many years, requiring great care and expense. After consecutive natural disasters, many orange gardens are at risk of exhaustion, affecting the next crop.

The decline in output has also had a strong impact on the purchasing market. Mr. Tran Van Tu, an orange trader in Thanh Vinh ward, said that normally he buys 5-7 tons of Dong Thanh oranges in Quang Dong commune every day to distribute to the provinces. But this year, placing orders is almost impossible because the output is too low. "Dong Thanh oranges are very popular with customers because of their aroma and sweetness, but this year we have to buy them sparingly because there is not enough supply."

According to Mr. Nguyen Khac Son - Vice Chairman of Quang Dong Commune People's Committee, the whole commune currently has more than 130 hectares of oranges, mainly delicious varieties such as Xa Doai long vang, Van Du... Of which, more than 70 hectares have achieved VietGAP certification. Thanks to its high quality, Dong Thanh oranges have long been a brand sought after by customers everywhere. On average, the whole region harvests about 1,300 tons of oranges each year, bringing in more than 42 billion VND for the people.

However, this year, due to damage from two storms, the expected output is only about 600 tons, and revenue has dropped to more than 20 billion VND. The commune is encouraging people to both harvest and focus on restoring their orange gardens. This is the main crop, determining the livelihood of hundreds of households, so restoration is very important.
