After the country's reunification, Naval Region 5 (formerly Phu Quoc Naval Group) and other forces attacked and liberated Tho Chu Island and the Southwest islands, reclaiming all the sacred sea and islands of the Fatherland.

In 1978, Zone 5 coordinated forces to carry out the Ta Lon Sea Landing Campaign, the first landing campaign of our Army, contributing to the victory in the Southwestern Border Protection War. In early 1979, the Zone continued to fight, liberating Kompongsom port, Kokong province and 21 islands in the Cambodian sea. During this period, the Zone participated in more than 50 battles, destroying and capturing thousands of enemies, and recovering many weapons and war vehicles.
In fulfilling their international duty to assist Cambodia, the officers and soldiers of Region 5 stood side-by-side with the Cambodian army and people to hunt down the remnants of the Khmer Rouge, helping to build the government and restore the economy , leaving behind a positive image of the Ho Chi Minh's Army - the soldiers of the Vietnam People's Navy.

Upon returning to the homeland, Region 5 continued to strengthen its organization, improve training, maintain combat readiness, build a solid defense posture, perform well in foreign affairs, search and rescue operations, support fishermen in staying at sea, and build a strong "people's support" base.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rear Admiral Le Ba Quan commended and congratulated the outstanding achievements of Naval Region 5; requested the unit to continue improving the quality of training and combat readiness; build a clean and strong Party organization, an "exemplary and typical" unit; and effectively carry out mass mobilization work and defense diplomacy.

On behalf of the officers and soldiers, Rear Admiral Ngo Van Thanh, Political Commissar of Region 5, affirmed that the entire unit will continue to uphold its glorious traditions, maintain unity and discipline, and excellently fulfill all assigned tasks.
Over the past 50 years, the 5th Naval Region has been awarded many prestigious honors: the First, Second, and Third Class Military Merit Orders; two First Class Orders of National Defense, along with many other high honors. The Region also had the honor of receiving the Friendship Order and the Angkor Order from the Cambodian government.
