The Tan Cuong tea region (Thai Nguyen City) is known as the tea capital of Thai Nguyen. Besides the image of lush green tea hills stretching in a bowl-like shape, it is also famous for its delicious tea products. Among them, the ancient midland tea variety has created the brand for this region, considered the "First-Class Tea".
Ms. Nguyen Thi Van, from Hong Thai 2 hamlet, Tan Cuong commune (Thai Nguyen City), shared that although the locality grows the tea variety that has created the Thai Nguyen tea brand, the area of ancient midland tea gardens here is now not much.
"My family is one of the few households that still preserve an ancient tea garden, currently only about 2 hectares remaining. The trees in the garden are nearly 60-70 years old, some even a hundred years old. This is a very precious tea variety passed down from our ancestors, so we must preserve it at all costs," said Ms. Van.

Traditional midland tea varieties are now very rare; most people have switched to grafted or hybrid tea varieties for higher yields.

Traditional midland tea varieties have many characteristics different from modern hybrid teas, such as round leaves, thick petals, and good resistance to pests and diseases.
The tea bushes bear the marks of time; many are older than a human lifespan.
Thanks to the soil and climate, the ancient tea grown in the midland region of Tan Cuong commune has a unique aroma and flavor. Each product made from this ancient tea is priced from 300,000 VND to 4,000,000 VND per kilogram.
When brewed, traditional midland tea has a golden-green color, a fragrant aroma reminiscent of roasted rice, a mild astringency, and a lingering sweet aftertaste.
Speaking to Lao Dong newspaper, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh, Vice Chairman of the Tan Cuong Commune People's Committee, said that currently, the entire commune has a total of 350 hectares of tea plantations, of which the area of traditional midland tea accounts for more than 100 hectares (30%).
"Traditional midland tea is the product that has built the brand of Thai Nguyen tea with its delicious, rich flavor and sweet aftertaste. This is a unique and valuable product that farmers need to preserve and develop comprehensively and sustainably to help the Thai Nguyen tea brand reach further," the local leader informed.
