Washington put in reverse gear

All planned activities involving public contact and participation in events on the island have been canceled. The trip is now purely a visit to US troops stationed at the US military base in Greenland. Under the agreement between the US and the Danish government on military bases on the island of Greenland, the US side can conduct visits to US troops on the island without having to ask permission from the Danish government.

The visits, which were previously quite normal, have now become a very sensitive matter domestically and internationally for both Denmark and the US because President Donald Trump has repeatedly mentioned his intention to buy Greenland. Mr. Trump argues that Greenland is of special importance to the security of the US, and therefore Washington must and will have Greenland one way or another.

Before Ms. Vance, Mr. Trump’s eldest son had visited Greenland. The strategy used by the new US administration in approaching Greenland is to use people who do not hold any positions in the government but are very close to the center of power in the US, such as relatives of the president and vice president, to make official trips to Greenland, with the delegation including members of the US government or officials.

This was a way to hide the official purpose behind the unofficial nature and expression of the diplomatic event, to "both seduce and pressure" the people and the government on the island, to distance them from Denmark. The US side had to quickly put it in reverse because this method had become too obvious and started to backfire. But putting it in reverse here did not mean that the US had given up on pursuing its intention.
