Binh Thanh Commune: Strong progress in gender equality after merger

Following the administrative boundary merger, Binh Thanh commune in Dong Thap province faced the reality of having a large geographical area but a limited number of female officials. Despite this, gender equality efforts have been maintained and implemented effectively, creating strong and positive changes in the awareness and actions of the local people.

Sharing about the initial difficulties, Ms. Vo Thi Thuy Linh, Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Binh Thanh commune, said: "The biggest difficulty for the commune is the lack of resources. Because the commune was recently merged, we do not yet have dedicated staff to implement gender equality work."

Officials from the Women's Union of Binh Thanh commune actively visited each household to disseminate information on gender equality and the prevention and control of domestic violence.

Furthermore, limited funding is also a barrier in the implementation process. However, overcoming the challenges of personnel and funding, gender equality work in Binh Thanh has achieved encouraging progress. The key lies in proactive efforts and the integration of awareness-raising activities.

The thematic communication model on gender equality is implemented continuously, combined with maintaining the activities of the Happy Family Club - Community Center.

These activities not only provide knowledge but also create a space for women and men to dialogue and share. This, in turn, makes a practical contribution to enhancing the status and voice of women in the family and society.

The Women's Union of Binh Thanh commune has also flexibly applied a shift in its communication methods. Ms. Phan Thi Cam Quy, Vice President of the Women's Union of Binh Thanh commune, shared about the modern approach: "Digital-age communication methods use illustrations, are concise, but the women understand them."

Women in Binh Thanh commune participated in a specialized training session on gender equality, contributing to raising awareness and enhancing their roles in the family and society.

Over the past period, the Women's Union of the commune has also followed the province's policy of establishing digital models such as: "Digital Branches" and "Digital Families".

Integrating awareness campaigns about children's rights and gender equality into digital models has helped women better understand how to build violence-free families, raise children well, and develop economically .

Currently, about 80% of women have access to digital technology , which helps them easily acquire knowledge and understand their responsibilities in building an equal, prosperous, and happy family.

The spread of gender equality in Binh Thanh is clearly demonstrated through the consensus of all segments of the population, especially the youth.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuc Khien, representing the core youth union members of Binh Thanh commune, shared: “In the digital age, gender equality is not just a slogan but an urgent need to ensure respect and safety, especially for girls. Many youth union members in the area have committed to building a civilized, equal, and violence-free society.”

The change is not only coming from officials but is also deeply ingrained in the awareness of the people. Mr. Do Van Kit, residing in Binh Chanh hamlet, Binh Thanh commune, after attending the training course, has a clear understanding of gender equality: "I myself have gained some awareness of gender equality, and from there I can guide and arrange for parents and children to work together towards gender equality in the family."

"Previously, we followed old customs, but now they no longer exist. We are creating conditions for harmonious living from top to bottom." Similarly, Mr. Luong Van Hoi, residing in Hamlet 2, Binh Thanh Commune, emphasized: "Gender equality means living in harmony. We must understand this ourselves and instill it in our families, and spread it among our relatives and clans."

In particular, the story of Ms. Tran Thi Anh Nguyet, head of the Women's Association in Binh Trung hamlet, is a clear example of a change in mindset. She has eight grandchildren (six girls and two boys), and she affirms: "It doesn't matter whether they are girls or boys; they are all loved without discrimination. Whatever field of study they want to pursue, we let them study it; we don't force them." In her family, daughters-in-law and sons are treated equally, and husbands and wives share household chores.

Comrade Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Thanh commune, said that in the past year, gender equality work in Binh Thanh commune achieved many outstanding achievements thanks to a stable socio-economic foundation and the serious attention of all levels.

Public awareness has been significantly raised through continuous communication on violence prevention and digital safety.

To build upon these positive achievements, at the launching ceremony for the 2025 Gender Equality Action Month held on December 8, 2025, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of the commune, Nguyen Thanh Cong, called on all citizens, especially men, to actively participate in the 2025 Action Month, proactively detect and promptly address violence, and work together to build equal, civilized, and happy families and communities.
