After the flood, Muong Xen commune, Nghe An province, suffered heavy losses. During those difficult days, the image of soldiers wearing combat fatigues, their feet covered in mud, quietly accompanying the people to overcome the consequences of natural disasters became a strong spiritual support, like silent yet resilient milestones in the midst of the flood. The moment of farewell to the soldiers returning to their units fully reflected the feelings of the people here for the soldiers.
Immediately after the flood, officers and soldiers of Regiment 764, Nghe An Provincial Military Command and Regiment 1, Division 324, Military Region 4 were present from the very first days. Without hesitation, they went to each isolated village, together with the people, clearing mud, clearing sewers, and rebuilding roofs that had tilted after the storm. Despite the erratic rain and sunshine, difficult terrain, and makeshift living conditions... they did not complain.
From early morning, many people were present to say goodbye to the soldiers. |
Representatives of local authorities and people presented flowers to the units before returning to their units. |
The soldiers' contributions have received warm affection from the people. Not through empty slogans or long, polished documents, but through steaming boiled corn, bottles of reserved mineral water, warm loaves of bread... or small stories full of humanity.
Like the story of Major Nguyen Van Nhat, an employee of the Political Department, Regiment 764. When he accidentally dropped his phone in the river, he stopped by a shop to rent a phone to use during the day he was on duty in Muong Xen. The shop owner did not hesitate, happily lending it without taking a penny: "You have worked hard for the people, I contribute a little bit of my heart, it's nothing, consider it as a thank you from the people here to the soldiers", the words were gentle, but full of affection.
Warm hugs before parting. |
The handshakes were tight as if to convey everything. |
After many days of fighting natural disasters together, the soldiers and the people of Muong Xen have formed a strong, close relationship like blood relatives. Therefore, the day of withdrawal, which seemed to be the moment of closing a mission, turned into a moment of farewell filled with nostalgia and emotion.
Gifts filled with love given by people. |
From early morning, many people came out to see the soldiers off. Under the thin mist, on the newly cleared roads, every gaze followed, every handshake was tight, every word of advice seemed to hold the soldiers' steps. There were children running after the convoy, waving their hands endlessly; there were old people standing silently by the roadside, tears welling up in their eyes.
The army has passed, the people still stand watching... |
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Huong (75 years old), living in block 5, Muong Xen commune, despite her old age and weak health, still used a cane to stand since morning. Her voice was trembling as she said: “I have nothing but thanks. When you guys left, I suddenly felt empty and sad.” A sadness that was not loud, but spread widely in the hearts of those who stayed behind.
The delegation said goodbye to comrades at the Defense Command of Region 4 (Nghe An). |
In his farewell speech, comrade Nguyen Viet Hung, Party Secretary and Chairman of the People's Council of Muong Xen commune, choked up: "The image of soldiers working day and night in the rain and sun, not afraid of difficulties and hardships when participating in overcoming the consequences of storm No. 3 with the people; or the hasty meals in muddy and dusty houses... have left a deep impression in the hearts of the Party Committee, government and people of Muong Xen commune. Although today you comrades temporarily leave Muong Xen to continue taking on new tasks, the feelings that you have for the people of your commune will always be preserved and cherished by us."
The army moved away but the people still stood watching. |
The days of flood and rain have passed, Muong Xen has gradually revived. But that deep affection between the army and the people will still remain not only in memories, but also in every sincere act of sharing. Because in times of trouble, human love is something that never fades. The soldiers have gone, but the affection still remains here like a gentle echo in the mountains and forests of Western Nghe An...!
