Rie Qudan is having an exchange with Vietnamese readers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on the occasion of the book Tokyo Tower of Empathy , a book with 5% of AI that won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in Japan, which has just been translated and introduced to Vietnamese readers.
AI cannot overcome the limits of literary creation yet.
Rie Qudan's exchange with Hanoi readers on the afternoon of November 30 revolved around the topic: what the writer thinks about AI and how the female writer uses AI to compose.
Rie Qudan says the way the world has covered her AI statements shows that AI is a story that has received a lot of attention. She credits AI for helping her literature gain more attention and be translated into other languages.
After the work with 5% AI, many AI-related jobs came to her as if she were an AI expert. A company asked her to write a work with 95% AI. The result was the short story Rain and Clouds of 4,000 words. The work was signed by the author as an AI software and the name of the female writer.
Rie Qudan said that from this 95% AI work, she concluded that AI cannot overcome the limits in literary creation, especially AI does not have an intrinsic desire to create, a desire to be recognized like humans.
"Until people can analyze the process of forming creative desire in humans, AI will not overcome the limits of literary creation," said Rie Qudan.
The female writer also affirmed that using AI does not take away the identity of a writer. Using AI even helps her understand herself better, understand that she really wants this and not that, something that the writer would not realize if she wrote it herself.

Tokyo Tower of Empathy: Is Tolerance to Crime Good?
Using AI when writing Tokyo Tower of Empathy , Rie Qudan explained that in this work, the female protagonist often chats with an AI chatbot, and in these conversations, Rie Qudan uses AI.
The story takes place in a fictional Japan where "tolerance" towards crime has become a dominant social value, and a massive project called Sympathy Tower Tokyo is initiated.
It is a high-rise prison in the middle of the capital with the aim of holding criminals in "humane" and "empathetic" conditions. The building is expected to become a new architectural symbol of Tokyo, reflecting social ideals.
The project was designed by Makina Sara - a famous architect, who also carried the haunting memory of a criminal she never forgave. Therefore, the idea of a prison built on the spirit of humanity contradicted Sara's personal experiences and beliefs.
She had to maintain her job while looking for an outlet for her inner conflict. One of the "outlets" was chatting with an AI chatbot to spark inspiration and vent her inner thoughts.
Rie Qudan was born in 1990 in Saitama. In 2021, her Bad Music won the 126th Bungaku Kai Literature Prize for New Authors.
The work Schoolgirl released that same year was nominated for the 166th Akutagawa Prize and the 35th Yukio Mishima Prize.
In January 2024, Tokyo Tower of Empathy won her the prestigious Akutagawa Prize.
