Dr. Michelle Kelman, a lecturer at the University of California School of Dentistry (USA), said oral hygiene is important. Poor oral care can lead to serious health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

While replacing your toothbrush isn't the biggest issue when it comes to dental health, using an old toothbrush can have negative consequences, according to CNBC .

You should change your toothbrush at least every 3 months.

How often should you replace your toothbrush?

You should replace your toothbrush at least every three months, Dr. Kelman says. But those who brush more vigorously may need to replace it sooner.

When in doubt, look at the bristles. When they look frayed, it's time to replace them, says Kelman. It's also important to replace your toothbrush after you've recovered from an illness like a cold or the flu.

What happens if you don't change your toothbrush regularly?

Using a toothbrush with frayed bristles can cause a number of problems, including:

Not cleaning teeth thoroughly.

Leaves plaque behind.

Germs accumulate and spread in the mouth.

To brush your teeth most effectively, Dr. Kelman notes the following two things:

Floss before brushing your teeth at night.

Let the toothbrush dry naturally before storing it in a sealed container to prevent bacteria from building up, according to CNBC.

What about electric toothbrushes?

If you use an electric toothbrush, you should replace the brush head about every two months or as recommended by the manufacturer. The bristles on an electric toothbrush head can wear out faster than those on a manual toothbrush due to the high-speed movement and rotation during brushing, according to the Times Of India.
