On November 28, the Police Department of District 12 (Ho Chi Minh City) announced that they have initiated criminal proceedings and executed arrest warrants against Nguyen Thanh Tay (41 years old) and his son Nguyen Vu Thien T. (14 years old, both from Quang Tri province , temporarily residing in Thu Duc City) for the crime of "robbery".
Earlier, in the early morning of November 12th, Mr. Dinh Cong D. (24 years old, from Tien Giang province) went to the Thanh Loc Ward Police Station in District 12 to report being robbed.
According to the report, at 2:30 AM on the same day, Mr. D. was riding his SH motorbike with license plate 63G1–180XX on Ha Huy Giap street when he was approached and attacked by two individuals on a motorbike who sprayed him with pepper spray.
Mr. D. drove a little further before stopping. Then, the two assailants used an electric stun gun to shock him, rendering him unconscious.
The two suspects robbed Mr. D. of his SH motorbike and a bag containing an iPhone 11 Pro Max, a wallet, personal documents, and vehicle registration papers. Upon regaining consciousness, Mr. D. reported the incident to the local police.
After receiving reports about the incident, the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department's leadership directed the Criminal Police Department and the District 12 Police to promptly investigate and apprehend the perpetrators.
Through the extraction of security camera footage, the police determined that Mr. D. was attacked and robbed of his motorbike and other belongings. The motorbike used by the two perpetrators was a red and black Attila model; after committing the crime, the two suspects fled towards Go Vap district.
Through investigative techniques, the police identified the travel route of the two suspects. During their escape, they changed their clothes and vehicle license plates to mislead the investigation.
The police traced their destination to a house on Hoang Hoa Tham Street, Binh Thanh District, but the two suspects were not inside.
The police inspected the house and discovered an SH motorbike with license plate 63G1 – 180XX hidden there.
In addition, the house contained several other items of evidence, including: 2 motorcycle license plates, 2 cans of pepper spray, 3 stun batons, 1 wooden slingshot, and 5 glass marbles.
Police officers ambushed and arrested the father and son suspects while they were in front of a nearby coffee shop. During questioning, the two admitted to committing the robbery.
According to the suspect's confession, due to needing money for expenses, Tay persuaded his son to commit robbery. Around October 2023, Tay instructed his son to search online for two fake license plates and several weapons such as an electric baton, pepper spray, a slingshot, and glass marbles to use as tools for the crime.
In the early hours of November 12th, Tay drove his motorbike with his son around various areas looking for a target to rob. When they spotted Mr. D. riding an SH motorbike on Ha Huy Giap street, Tay drove the motorbike close to him, while T., sitting behind him, used pepper spray and an electric baton to attack him.
Upon seeing Mr. D. collapse on the road, the father and son stole his motorbike and bag containing his belongings and documents before fleeing.
