On January 17th, Military Hospital 175 announced that it had successfully performed a living-donor liver transplant on a 55-year-old patient.
Accordingly, the patient is Mr. NNK (55 years old, residing in Lam Dong province). At the end of 2020, Mr. K. was diagnosed with hepatitis B and treated at the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
By 2022, screening results showed he had a liver tumor. In early 2023, Mr. K. was transferred to Military Hospital 175 for further treatment of liver cancer. By November 2024, doctors determined that the only solution to prolong his life was a liver transplant.

Mr. K shared: “The doctors said that in my case, without a liver transplant, my chances of survival were very low because my liver was cirrhotic and the tumor was progressing and invading my body. Fortunately, I have a nephew in my family who has a compatible liver and the same blood type and is willing to donate his liver to save me.”
According to Major, MSc. Dr. Nguyen Van Manh – Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, the patient had multiple liver tumors and had undergone various treatments without success, with the tumors recurring. In this case, a liver transplant was the only chance to prolong the patient's life.
After completing the tests, the medical team at Military Hospital 175 proceeded with surgery for Mr. K. The operation lasted approximately 7 hours.
"The surgical team consisted of approximately 50 doctors and medical staff from 20 specialties who participated in the surgical procedure," shared Dr. Nguyen Van Manh.

Following the liver transplant, Mr. K gradually recovered and was transferred from the special isolation ward to a regular treatment area after a week. The liver donor also recovered quickly, being able to be discharged after only seven days and return to their normal life. Also today, the patient was discharged and returned home with their family.
Mr. K emotionally shared: “Despite my advanced age, I still have faith in the expertise and dedication of the medical team. Now that my health is stable, I am truly grateful to the doctors for their wholehearted treatment and encouragement throughout the liver transplant process.”
To prepare for this step, Military Hospital 175 has built 96 technical and operational procedures for liver transplants, and set up pre-transplant patient preparation areas, operating rooms, and many other items.
