Previously, a young man named NTT (24 years old, residing in Can Tho City) came to the clinic with swelling in the corner of his left eye, pain and a cloudy nasal discharge from his left nostril. According to the patient, about 2 weeks ago, while drinking with a friend, there was an argument. After that, the two sides fought and were stabbed in the corner of their eye by a sharp object.
When he returned home, he experienced swelling and pain in the corner of his eyes. He tried self-treatment but it did not improve, so he went to Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital for examination.
Dr. Nguyen Trieu Viet - Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital - said that through medical history and examination, doctors suspected a foreign object in the eye socket and nostril.
The patient was prescribed an endoscopy and CT scan. Ophthalmologists and ENT doctors consulted and determined that this was a complicated case of foreign body, the foreign body was about 9cm long. The foreign body was suspected to be the tip of a chopstick stuck in the nasal cavity, causing inflammation in the eye socket and nose.
After consultation, the doctors decided to perform endoscopic surgery combined with open surgery to remove all foreign objects, clean bone fragments, foreign objects, and seal the hole in the orbital ethmoidal cavity.
The surgery lasted nearly 2 hours, the team successfully removed the foreign object, a 9cm long chopstick, which penetrated from the outside, broke the orbital ethmoidal wall, broke the maxillary sinus wall and was stuck in the nasal ethmoidal wall; at the same time, there were also bone fragments and fragments of the foreign object.

The surgeon flushed out the infected sinus and sealed the perforated area of the orbital ethmoidal area. After surgery, the patient was conscious, fortunately the eye function was not affected, and vision was almost normal.
According to Dr. Nguyen Trieu Viet, fortunately the foreign object did not cause serious damage to the eye socket or nasal sinus area.
These are important organs. If a foreign object is stabbed into them and not detected and removed promptly, the patient is likely to suffer from infection that affects vision and causes serious sinus infections that spread to the brain.
