"I am very happy that the athletes have achieved success. In the future, they will continue to improve and perform even better," said expert Park Chung-gun, visibly moved as he witnessed the success of shooter Pham Quang Huy, who won the gold medal at the 19th Asian Games in the men's 10m air pistol event.
It's even more touching that the young shooter whose talent Coach Park discovered and brought onto the Vietnamese national shooting team to mentor has now become an Asian champion.
Shooter who won Vietnam's first gold medal at ASIAD 19: From a family of shooters, a student of coach Hoang Xuan Vinh.
Having been involved with Vietnamese shooting since 2006 at the request of the Korean Shooting Federation, Coach Park Chung-gun has nurtured many generations of talented shooters. Despite having a stable job in Korea and being close to his family, he decided to come to Vietnam and train many generations of skilled shooters with his dedication, sincerity, and exceptional expertise.
Expert Park Chung-gun (wearing glasses) has nurtured talent Pham Quang Huy.
Park Chung-gun's greatest contribution, along with head coach Nguyen Thi Nhung, was helping shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh win one gold and one silver medal at the 2006 Olympics; and a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships. In addition, his students also led Vietnamese shooting to many other international achievements, such as the bronze medal won by Tran Quoc Cuong and Le Thi Linh Chi at the 18th Asian Games in 2018.
Shooter Pham Quang Huy is one of the athletes that coach Park Chung-gun has been nurturing and placing high hopes on. He emphasized that Quang Huy has spent 5 to 6 years training with the national team. "I always want the athletes to be extremely focused in the final competition. I always want them to make a difference compared to their opponents, which is to shorten their shooting time to gain an advantage," Coach Park said.
Coach Park Chung-gun also helped Quang Huy make a breakthrough by advising his student to switch from rapid-fire to air rifle. He emphasized that his student had excellent shooting technique and the advantage of using a different type of rifle compared to other athletes, which greatly improved his performance in competitions.
"But he still needs to train much more. Remember, the competition at the Olympics is fierce, requiring even greater effort. I hope that Vietnamese shooters will win more spots at the Olympics," Coach Park Chung-gun assessed.
Besides coach Park Chung-gun, Pham Quang Huy's success also bears the mark of his mentor, Hoang Xuan Vinh. Having reached the pinnacle of the 2016 Rio Olympics with one gold and one silver medal, Hoang Xuan Vinh imparted to Quang Huy the lesson of intense concentration – a factor that makes the difference for a shooting champion.
Pham Quang Huy made remarkable progress and became the Asian champion.
According to Quang Huy, the most important thing for a marksman is to focus completely on their job, putting their mind entirely on the gun, paying attention to technique, and pushing all external pressures out of their head to concentrate on the single mission.
And behind Quang Huy, there is always the presence of his coach, Hoang Xuan Vinh. For the athlete born in 1996, there is no more solid and reliable support than that.
"After 11 years of training, I am happy with the ASIAD gold medal. This was my first final at the ASIAD, and luckily I won the gold medal. In the later rounds, I focused only on technique, without thinking too much. Then, when it was just me competing against the Korean athlete, I didn't think much, just focused on what I was doing."
"With coach Hoang Xuan Vinh behind me, I feel very secure. I can focus entirely on technique and not think too much about anything else. I often joke that sometimes you have to be a little 'self-absorbed' to avoid overthinking. However, sometimes thoughts just flood in. When practicing, I have to learn to push those thoughts away," Quang Huy shared.
