On May 15, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that the Ho Chi Minh City infectious disease surveillance system recorded 40 COVID-19 cases treated at hospitals in the city from mid-April until now, and no cases required respiratory support.
In week 19 alone (from May 5 to 11), the whole city had 16 reported cases, an increase of 10 cases compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks (6 cases/week).
Accumulated from the beginning of 2025 to now, the city has had 51 COVID-19 cases, including 29 inpatients and 22 outpatients.
Compared to the same period in 2024, the total number of cases in 2025 decreased by 83%, and there were no cases requiring respiratory support.
During the first 14 weeks of the year, only 1-2 COVID-19 cases were reported each week; however, since week 15 (mid-April) until now, the number of weekly COVID-19 cases has shown signs of increasing quite clearly. The city has not recorded any COVID-19 outbreaks in the area.
The Department of Health added that currently, globally, the number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 is on a downward trend, and the World Health Organization has not recorded any new SARS-CoV2 variants.
In Vietnam, COVID-19 has become an endemic infectious disease causing acute respiratory illness similar to other respiratory viruses.
The increase in travel and gatherings of people at recent festival events is the cause of the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, and possibly in the following weeks.
Although no severe cases have been recorded and no new dangerous variants have been detected, the increase in the number of cases has somewhat affected people's lives.
The Department of Health directed the City Center for Disease Control to continue monitoring the situation of COVID-19 and acute respiratory infections in the world, domestically and in the city, monitor the emergence of virus variants, and implement appropriate and effective disease prevention and control measures.
Previously, on May 14, the Ministry of Health had information about the COVID-19 situation in the world and in Vietnam.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, from the beginning of 2025 to now, there have been 148 scattered cases recorded in 27 provinces and cities, with no deaths. Of which, Ho Chi Minh City (34 cases), Hanoi (19), Hai Phong (21), Bac Ninh (14), Nghe An (17)...
The Ministry of Health assessed that globally, the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths is on a downward trend; the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in Thailand coincides with the time and incubation period after the traditional New Year, most likely due to an increase in large gatherings and the increase of the XBB.1.16 sub-variant.
In Vietnam, COVID-19 is a common disease. With the high level of interaction and travel of Vietnamese people during the April 30 and May 1 holidays, it is possible that there will be an increase in cases in our country in the coming time; however, there may not be an increase in severe cases due to variants of the COVID-19 virus.
COVID-19 cases increase slightly, what does the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recommend?
- People must wear masks when visiting medical facilities for examination and treatment, in crowded places, and on public transport;
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and clean water or hand sanitizer; cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing; do not spit indiscriminately.
- Eat nutritious food and exercise to improve health.
- When having symptoms of cough, fever, difficulty breathing, contact a medical facility for timely consultation, examination and treatment.
- People returning from countries with increasing COVID-19 cases need to proactively monitor their health and take infection prevention measures to protect themselves, their families, or close contacts.
