Microsoft CEO visits Indonesia, announces $1.7 billion investment

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella visited Indonesia on April 30 and announced a major investment in the archipelago. According to Xinhua News Agency, Microsoft pledged to invest 1.7 billion USD to develop artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services in Indonesia.

"$1.7 billion to bring the latest and greatest AI infrastructure to Indonesia. I'm very, very happy," CEO Satya Nadella said at an AI event at the Convention Center in Jakarta.

The CEO revealed that Microsoft will train 840,000 people in AI and support the developer community in the Southeast Asian country. The investment will be allocated over the next four years to improve cloud services and AI infrastructure in Indonesia, building a new data center.

On the same day, Indonesian President Joko Widodo received and held talks with the delegation led by Mr. Nadella at the presidential palace. The two sides discussed cooperation between the US technology group and the Indonesian government on human resource and technology development, focusing on the field of AI.

Speaking at an event the same day, Indonesia's coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, Luhut Pandjaitan, said the government plans to grant dual citizenship to people of Indonesian descent to attract skilled workers. The targeted group are former Indonesian citizens living abroad.

According to Reuters, Indonesia does not grant dual citizenship to adults while children with dual citizenship must choose one before turning 18.
