When the new rural development program was implemented, the market on the shore was invested in and modernized, causing the floating market to gradually lose its number of buyers and sellers. However, it remains deeply ingrained in the memories of many generations, becoming an indispensable part of life and a unique cultural feature of the Mekong Delta region .
The floating market used to be bustling on the Ngan Dua canal in Hong Dan commune.
Every day, from around 4 a.m., boats from the Cai Trau canal ( Can Tho City) and the Loc Ninh canal bustle into the Ngan Dua canal. Some transport goods for trading throughout the provinces, while others take advantage of the opportunity to bring their homegrown agricultural products to the market.
The image of women rowing boats laden with goods is a familiar sight at the floating market.
Mr. Vo Ut Chinh, 63 years old, residing in Thanh 2 hamlet, Hong Dan commune, has been making a living at the floating market for over 20 years. Besides selling along the canal, he also drives his small boat to neighboring communes. He confided: “My wife and I have been familiar with the river life for a long time. Even though there's a market on land now, we're still attached to this profession. We're getting old, but we have no intention of giving up the floating market.”

The goods at the floating market are diverse, ranging from snakehead fish and crabs to home-grown vegetables and everyday necessities. Along the canal banks, there are also small drink stalls and general stores, contributing to the rhythm of life and serving the local people from early morning until late at night.
Boats and barges ply the canals, creating a bustling trade scene.
For many small traders, buying and selling on the floating market is not just a means of livelihood but has become an integral part of their lives. Although the bustling trade and crowded boats of the past are gone, the Ngan Dua floating market continues to exist as a cultural heritage in the hearts of the people living along the river.
The Ngan Dua canal system connects many other canals and waterways, facilitating trade and commerce.
