On December 12th, The Strait Times published the story of Swedish musician Mattias Krantz, who successfully trained an octopus named Takoyaki to play the piano. Takoyaki can now play a piano that has been adapted to function underwater.

The name Takoyaki (octopus ball) is given to the octopus itself, which is also the name of a popular Japanese snack, usually made from batter and filled with diced octopus.

Mr. Krantz bought his "apprentice" in March from a seafood market in Portugal that specializes in products from South Korea.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, which has 1.79 million subscribers, on November 5th, he said: "Everyone here is looking for dinner. And I'm looking for my next piano student."

The training plan began with winning Takoyaki's trust. Initially, the octopus was shy and rejected Mr. Krantz's food, but gradually accepted it. The Swedish musician shared, "I think it started to realize I was the one who saved it from becoming takoyaki."

After gaining the pet's trust, the next step was to create the perfect piano for Takoyaki. Realizing Takoyaki couldn't use its tentacles to press the keys, Mr. Krantz installed handles on the keys. The octopus could wrap its tentacles around these handles and pull to create sounds.

The biggest challenge then was teaching Takoyaki to play specific piano keys. After trying flashing lights and failing, Mr. Krantz came up with a powerful motivator: crab.

Mr. Krantz created a device called a "crab elevator," which places a crab in a tube above a piano. With each Takoyaki key played correctly, the crab is gradually lowered until the octopus completes a melody.

This effort was successful. Mr. Krantz even taught Takoyaki to play the notes of the song Baby Shark, although it was a little off-key.

Krantz said excitedly, "It was probably the worst thing I've ever done, and maybe the most exciting. I've never pushed myself to the limit like that before."
